Sure, buying food in bulk and storing it in the freezer is a great way to save money on the grocery bill, but you can also save money on non-food items when you store them in the freezer. Batteries, steel wool, garden seeds and un-popped popcorn all last longer after spending some time in the deep freeze, saving you money in the long run.
Prevent Battery Drain
The cold temperature of the deep freeze prevents batteries from self-discharging and being drained of power before they are used, a phenomenon which occurs when new batteries are stored in the typical kitchen drawer. Leave new batteries in their package and place on freezer shelf until needed.
Prevent Steel Wool Pads from Rusting
Nothing cleans the gunk off pots and pans like steel wool, but once the steel wool pad has been used it will rust, unless it's stored in the freezer. The c old temperature of the deep freeze prevents the oxidation process which causes rust. After using a steel wool pad, shake out excess water and place in a Ziploc bag, then store in the freezer until needed again. Remove from freezer while cooking and the steel wool pad will be ready for cleanup when the meal is over.
Increase Garden Seed Germination
Storing leftover garden seeds in the freezer increases germination odds by keeping the seeds dormant until planting time. Place leftover garden seeds in an airtight container and store in the deep freeze indefinitely. The garden seeds (vegetable or flower) will stay dry, fresh and dormant until removed from the freezer and thawed. Plant seeds within a few days (preferably same day) of thawing.
Get More Popped Corn
Storing un-popped popcorn in the freezer until you are ready to pop it will yield much more of the finished product. Store un-popped corn kernels in an airtight bag in the freezer to prevent them from drying out, which is the cause of them not popping when heat is applied to them. No need to defrost popcorn prior to popping, just remove from freezer and pop. Freezer storage works for stove top or microwave popcorn varieties.
