Buy them at the store
Instead of having them printed professionally and personalized, buy your wedding invitations at the store. This also works with online stores. You can find very pretty invitations in most stores, and you can use them more as "save the date" invitations. This works especially well if you are planning to have a more casual and laid back wedding. And if you buy them from an online vendor, you can usually personalize them -- without the high cost of custom wedding invitation print jobs.
Make them yourself
My sister-in-law made her wedding invitations herself using desktop publishing software. This software usually runs between $20 and $100, depending on how many templates you want, and how the templates look. Usually, wedding invitations are just some of the templates offered. You can use stationery desktop publishing software to make birthday cards, party invitations and other types of cards. This means that you will get continued use from the software, even after the wedding is over.
Another way to make your own wedding invitations is to do them by hand. Stamping and card-making classes are often available, and you can learn to make attractive cards (including wedding invitations!) yourself. I would only do this if you are planning an intimate wedding with fewer guests.
Send evites to your wedding
In this online world, many couples are bringing their weddings to the Internet. And this includes email wedding invitations. These are the least expensive of all because they can be free. If you want to pay a little more to design more professional wedding evites, that can work as well. But sending wedding invitations via email can be a great way to save money on your wedding. But you will have to round up the email addresses of all your invitees.
Look for deals on professionally printed wedding invitations
If you want your wedding invitations professionally printed, you can look for good deals. Order them well ahead of time, during the "off season" in October through January. Shop around for the best prices and ask the printer if there is discontinued paper that s/he would like to get rid of. You can save money on these professionally printed wedding invitations by limiting the number of cards you include, and by not using RSVP cards and envelopes.
