Unless you're a vegetarian, one of the biggest blows to the food budget is the cost of meat. But your savings can add up quickly if you purchase cuts of meat that are reduced for quick sale. The meat is perfectly safe but you'll need to incorporate it into your meal plan quickly or freeze it for later use. This is one area where you can easily expect to shave 30-50% off the cost of your purchases.

Think Outside of the Box

Another one of the most costliest areas of many food budgets is the purchase of pre-packaged convenience foods. With a little advance planning and minimal time investment it is quite possible to enjoy all your favorite foods at a fraction of the cost. By simply setting aside a couple of hours during the weekend to prepare the ingredients you'll need, you can assemble several of your favorite main dishes, side dishes and desserts and set them aside for laster use during the week. Your meals will be healthier and more economical too.

Purchasing generics and store brands is another excellent way to kick those high grocery bills to the curb. And in most cases, there is no noticeable difference in the quality of the food since many of the generics and store brands are the very same items as the name brands, packaged under another label. This is one are where it definitely pays to play the field.
