Saving Gas: Ways To Improve Our Driving

Kenneth Crawford
Gas prices are increasing everyday and for those of us who drive that's not good news. Since most of us have accepted that fact, as if we had a choice, we must find ways to use less of it. We must increase our fuel economy, though sometimes that seems like a daunting task. But it really isn't as difficult as you would think. In fact, the most effective ways to save gas are free or inexpensive and most of them are easy to do. The two main areas that must be improved upon is changing the way we drive and improving vehicle performance.

Changing the way we drive has to with planning our trips, our style of driving, and other things that we do as drivers behind the wheel. The vehicle performance issue will deal with regular maintenance and making sure the car is doing what it is supposed to do.To get better gas mileage out of your vehicle by changing your driving behavior is really easy. Take a look at how you could keep from driving during peak hours or avoiding busy areas by changing your route. Going into work fifteen minutes early can keep you from having to sit in stop and go traffic that kills your gas mileage. Consider leaving work a little later than everybody. Beating rush hour traffic doesn't always mean leaving early, in fact you are probably better off leaving a little later. If you cannot adjust your schedule, perhaps you can adjust your route a bit to avoid the lights and traffic in the busiest part of your drive.Another behavior to change is to plan your trips out. Lets say you have to go to the grocery store, the bank, and visit Aunt Sue this weekend. Rather than make three different trips, turn it all into one. Go by and see Aunt Sue for a bit, stop by the bank, hit the grocery store and then head home. You will find that the more you plan your trips the less time you are spending at the gas pump.

The next thing to look at is maintaining your vehicles performance. I cannot stress enough how important it is to keep regular maintenance on your car. This includes the simple things like proper air pressure in the tires and regular oil changes. You also must keep up the tune-up schedule for your vehicle as well. Something else you can do as well is clean out your car. We have become accustomed to leaving things in the trunk or back seat. This stuff adds weight to the car that requires more fuel to transport. It could be like having one or two extra people in the car with you. Take the golf clubs out of the trunk when you get home.

The keys to saving gas is combining changing the way we drive with maintaining our vehicles properly. Only by doing this can we expect to get the full fuel economy out of our vehicles. Failure to do so will see us at the gas station more regularly and spending money needlessly. So the best way to save gas is to apply these simple changes. Do this and spend less money at the pump and keep more money in your wallet.
