Saving on Heating Costs

Easy Ways to Really Save

Eva Kingsford
The fall and winter seasons don't just mean falling leaves and favorite holidays, for many they mean cool weather and the dreaded high costs of heating their home. The average household can spend quite a bit of money on heating their home and that can leave them feeling like they're left out in the cold. Many people try to delay turning on their heat in an attempt to save money. Sadly, there are also those who cannot afford to heat their homes at all. The good news is that there are ways to cut heating costs for every home without cutting out the warm comfort.

The easiest way to save money on heating bills is to maintain the thermostat on one level at all times. By keeping the thermostat set to anywhere from around sixty-eight degrees to seventy-three degrees, the temperature within the home will remain at a comfortable level of warmth without using an excessive amount of energy or gas. It takes less energy and or gas to maintain a steady temperature within that targeted degree range than it does for a heating system to constantly have to start up and shut down. When constantly turning on and shutting off the heating system, it will take the system more energy and or gas to quickly achieve a higher level temperature and then to shut down and have to restart and achieve that level once more.

A great practice to aide with heating and in lowering heating costs as well as aiding in safety is to properly maintain heating systems. Central heating and cooling systems especially, need to be properly cleaned. This not only aides in a smoother function and flow of air and therefore less energy usage but it also removes the risk of a fire caused by any dust that may be built up around the air vents. Heating units should be inspected yearly by a professional to ensure that it is in proper working order and functioning economically and safely.

There are additional heating tools which can be purchased to help with heating and essentially heating costs. Electrical rotating heating towers can be purchases from any retailer and come anywhere from desk to floor standing sizes in a wide range of affordable prices. These towers heat without using any dangerous gases and are made to be touch-safe and to shut down in the case of over-heating. The rotating helps not only to evenly distribute the heat that the tower produces but to distribute the already existing heat within a room. This means that the primary heating system will need less energy and or gas to maintain the set temperature because the air in the room is being redistributed instead of wasted. These heating towers use much less energy than the larger heating systems do and make it easier to maintain a comfortable temperature within a room.

Maintenance on the home itself is the most effective method for saving money on heating costs in the long run. Air leaks can cause heating bills to sky rocket while leaving the home cold, when they are present. The most common sources of air leaks come from old and drafty windows as well as the gaps in door frames. Proper insulation along with updated windows and properly framed doors are recommended in these cases as a long-term solution to losing heat and saving money. If making such repairs are simply not possible then there are quick fixes that are inexpensive and readily available for immediate use at most large retailers. Such products include various forms of foam which help seal any cracks in a window frame, the foam is available in a spray can. Other products include foam liners with adhesive that adhere to the inside of a door frame and metal or plastic mud back splashes for door bottoms, both of which help prevent the escaping of heat and the entering of cold.

Saving on heating doesn't have to be uncomfortable, is easy enough for anyone to try and proves to be helpful and effective for all. Not only does saving on heating help save money but it is also an earth friendly measure which helps save the environment by saving on energy and precious natural resources.
