The first thing to consider is the type of store you shop at. Small family owned stores are generally more expensive then chain stores. However, you should still consider them for individual items. Sometimes they may still include better sales. Another type of store you may consider is a discount store, such as Aldi's or Save A Lot. You may also shop at warehouse type stores, such as, Sam's Club.
Chain grocery stores offer a variety of ways to save. You can often combine coupons with store discounts to maximize your savings. However, some stores tend to falsely advertise sales. By falsely advertise I mean, they will put a sales tag on an item with little to no actual savings. The key is to watch the prices of the items you generally use and keep tract of whether or not you are actually saving money with in store discounts. Be aware, you may not be able to use more then one form of savings on any one item.
Warehouse clubs are great for long term savings. They will sale bulk sizes of products at a lower price then individual sale. These stores are great for larger families. Keep in mind to not over purchase. Most food items have an expiration and may be wasted. Only use these stores for items you frequently use or have storage for. A deep freezer is a great option to store larger servings of meat. One negative aspect of warehouse store shopping is that often times you will be required to purchase a membership. These memberships vary in price, but are typically good for one to three years.
Discount stores may be the best way to save on groceries. This is often dependent upon your willingness to purchase unknown brands though. Be careful to check labels for nutritional content and any allergy information. For the most part the foods are still high quality and taste as good as other brands. However, it is often trial and error to find what you are looking for. These stores usually charge no membership fees.
The effectiveness of these options will vary for each individual. However, it is often easy to combine methods to maximize your savings. For example, you can buy your meats at a higher end grocery store, but go to a discount store for side dishes and produce. Keep in mind how much you save will often depend on the amount of travel involved.
