Saving Money This Christmas

Greg Seltz
I have included a few suggestions on financial savings during the holiday season. As we all know, money may be a bit tighter than previous holidays in our economy's current state. But just because hours have been cut, employment terminated, and our penny banks have been forced to surrender their life savings doesn't mean that forfeiting Christmas is a considerable option. In fact, even if we have to re-create our third grade Christmas gifts we can ensure presents to flow as did milk and honey. But let's hope for our children's sake that option can be ignored.

Though some of my recommendations may not be ethical, they are simply logical. This one is called "business." Although Black Friday is considered to have the largest sales and best discounted prices of the year, beware of other scams retailers use to leech your monies. The goal is to take advantage of the discounted prices, not let other prices take advantage of you. Without going into too much detail; double-check given prices, product warranties, return policies, etc. Though some of the sale prices may seem a bargain, retailers make up for the lost value elsewhere....don't fall for their bait. Many of the Black Friday sales can be discovered earlier if you shop online. Please note that you can view shipping options and their costs on USPS, FedEx, and UPS websites. Once again, do not let the retailer take advantage of you by increasing shipping charges. Shop early and be sure to research competition. Many companies will attempt to beat their competitors offer if only you ask; however, they won't offer unless your art of persuasion negotiates a bargaining deal. Finally, be prepared for chaos. Black Friday is not about losing profit to the average consumer to glorify their holiday memories...it's about "business."

Re-wrapping is one of my favorite methods of saving money during holidays. Though you may feel immoral re-wrapping last years gifts and revising the "To: Name" on it, lets face the reality aspect of it. Apparently, the gift was of no importance or value if it has remained cooped in the closet ever since. Eventually it will lose value or become waste; why not make good use of it and provide it to those with a higher demand for it. Heck, I don't feel bad re-wrapping a book my sister gave me last year if she may be interested in reading it. Besides, it will make for some sensible humor to liven the atmosphere.

Let's hope that the economy is not to the point where we result in arts and crafts. Until then, it is important that we are reminded of the consequences for shopping during the holidays as well as its advantages. Shopping for Christmas gifts throughout the entire year is also a valuable suggestion just ran by me. If you have a large family such as myself (and are not re-wrapping hand me downs), it will quickly become expensive to do it all at once, especially during Black Friday. Prepare early and relieve yourself of the stress haunting you around the holiday season; not too mention you will have more than enough time to locate close-outs and red tag sales. Then you may be able to save your penny bank until next year.
