Saving Money by Eliminating Power Wasted when Electronics Are in Standby Mode

There are numerous small home improvement projects that can help you save energy throughout your home. Many are not exactly projects, they are more or less items that can be purchase that help save you money on your electric bill. These simple devices are cost effective ways to either monitor your energy usage, reduce your energy usage, or eliminate energy usage altogether.

Over the last few years, many appliances have added what is known as a standby feature. This feature allows the unit to quickly come to life when the power button is depressed. Items such as TVs, computers, washing machines, receivers and game systems all incorporate this feature. The advantage of standby mode is less waiting when you want to use the item. This mode is certainly convenient, but it can cost you dearly in utility bills.

With a growing concern for the environment and a focus on being "green" and conserving or resources, new products have emerged that can help reduce your electrical consumption.

Items such as TVs and computer can draw a significant amount of power in standby mode. Some, nearly as much as when fully powered on. Standby can be like running your computer or TV continuously in terms of energy usage. There is a unique product that allows you to monitor a units electrical draw when on and when turned off. This product goes by the name of Kill-a-Watt. It's a simple device that helps monitor energy usage allowing you to see how much energy is consumed by a household item. Used correctly, this can help you determine which items draw a significant amount of energy when turned off.

There is another helpful device available from several manufacturers that is a power strip with a brain. This power strip senses when an item such as your TV is turned off. When it senses the item is turned off, it completely eliminates any electricity sent to that item. Similar to unplugging your TV from the wall when not in use, this item can save you a significant amount on your electric bill.

Together, both of these items will help you monitor and reduce your overall electrical consumption. They are not expensive to purchase and will save you money in the long term. They offer far better convenience than unplugging an item when not in use and are much more reliable than the unplugging method.

With all of the appliances and electronics found in current home, the savings can really add up when these devices are used. You will be amazed to see the difference they can make and could realize a yearly saving of $100 or more on your electrical bill with these simple home improvement devices.
