Some things are good to buy and store for later. If you get a great deal on meat, you can store servings in Ziploc and store it in the freezer. I do this a lot because I cook for only myself and I don't want the meat to go bad.
Also find what is nutritious for your particular needs. I found I need a lot of protein, so I eat a lot of beans and rice cooked in various ways. Because I can't have fish and don't want to clog my arteries with a lot of red meat. Beans and brown rice can be cooked in many delicious ways and if you make it from scratch can be very good for you. I have found that by making things from scratch, you can sometimes save as much as five bucks versus buying a hamburger at a restaurant for example.
Learning to cook is economical and also good for keeping your weight down. You never know what they put in restaurant made food. Lots of extra fat and salt and sugar I bet.
Also when eating economically, remember to eat healthily too. While my grandfather lived to around 95 eating a hot dog or a bit of ham hock and beans regularly, he didn't eat a lot. He was fairly healthy and remained active until he died of pancreatic cancer. The most important thing is to not over eat fatty foods. If you find it hard to resist these tempting foods, you are better off not getting them.
Buy an extra freezer to store your extras and regularly go through and use it. You will be amazed what you have forgotten about. And by the time you find it, you might want to have more. You can save a lot of money that way.
Also, remember to check the price per unit. Sometimes it is in orange to the left of the price. I found a large container of Friendlys ice cream to be much less expensive than buying smaller containers of Edy's. So even if you want to treat yourself, you can find deals if you aren't loyal to one brand.
Another trick is to buy the store brand. I don't like A &P store brand, but I do like Shop Rights store brand. Sometimes it is the same stuff as the brand name, just packaged different. I saved twenty cents per unit on dishwashing detergent and it does the same thing.
Other things to remember is that warehouse shopping is only a deal if you really use large amounts of something. If you don't like Jalapeno flavored cheese pretzels, it doesn't make sense to buy a hundred of them. But for a big family, saving on toilet paper and cleaning products can help a lot.
