Saving Money at the Grocery Store

During the recent months, saving money has become a key issue in maintaining financial stability. With words such as bailout, banks, recession, stimulus, in our daily vocabulary, one of the easiest places to save money is at the grocery store. This authors works at a grocery store as a part time job and has seen the number of people watching every penny increase significantly. Following the tips below, you will surely be able to save more when grocery shopping.

Shop the Competition

Many times this author has heard customers explain to him that they are loyal to grocery store A compared to grocery store B. When trying to save money, one of the best things to do is shop multiple grocery stores. The grocery stores sales ad circulates every week. If grocery store A has a better price on fruits and vegetables than grocery store B, shop at grocery store A for those particular items. If grocery store B has better quality and selection of meat, shop at grocery store B. If this tip is implemented, shop at all of the grocery stores during a single day. This will prevent you from picking up excess items if you shop over a few days time span.

Make a List

Making a list and sticking with it is another way to save money when shopping for groceries. Many times grocery stores will implement certain aspects of consumer psychology in order for the customer to spend more money. An example of this is the two essentials of milk and bread. Milk is at one end of the grocery store, while bread is at the complete opposite. Making a list will allow you not to pick up access items, and make your trip to the grocery store quicker, which will result in a lower bill at the checkout.

Use Coupons

Using coupons is another way to save money when grocery shopping. Venders plan that the majority of coupons issued will never be used, and if they are used, it is a small percentage. Combining coupons with sale items will result in money saved. However, sometimes coupons may make you spend more than what is needed in order to save a couple cents. Most grocery stores have loyalty card programs that allow individuals to receive special flyers in the mail, coupons at the checkout, and special prices on certain items. This author cannot guess how many coupons he has added up that the grocery store he works at sends out.

National Vender vs. Private Label

When selecting products that are on your grocery-shopping list, comparing national venders to private label store brands can save you money if done properly. The biggest misconception is that the quality is lacking in private label store brands. This misconception is easily fixed through comparison. Many national vender products and private label brands are stocked side by side on the shelving. If doubt arises, simply compare the two products. Many of these products are produced at the same manufacturer. This will allow you to save more money while purchasing a product that is just as good.

Buy the limit

Another manageable way to save money is to by the limit of the item. If you use a good amount of one item, and it is on sale buy one get two free, simply purchase it. Buying large quantities of a product you use often will save you money of your grocery bill. The majority of items in grocery stores has an extended shelf life, and can sit in your cabinet for as long as the product does not expire. When certain brands of frozen pizza are on sale, this author buys the limit and is set until the next time the product is on sale.

Wait Until the end of the month

Recently venders have been studying how customers spend their money throughout the month. The majority of people tend to spend leftover money at the end of the month resulting in a better sales period for the vender. During the end of the month, the sales for a certain product may be better than during the beginning of the month when the majority of customers have a good amount of money to spend

When applying all of these tips, you will surely save a good amount of money on your grocery bill on a weekly basis. As the days progress, the penny is even more precious as it has ever been. You will begin shopping more thriftily, while receiving the same amount and quality of the food but at a cheaper price.
