Are you looking for a few easy ways to save a few dollars during this economic downturn or just save a few bucks in general. One of the easiest ways to save money at home is in the lighting. There are several ways to cut costs around your house but when it comes to lighting there is not an easier way to save. Cutting back on lighting around your house is the absolute easiest way to cut energy costs. Let's face it, we all leave lights on that are absolutely unnecessary. During the day there is no reason to leave lights on in the house unless you are in that room and even then unless you are in a dark basement natural light is usually adequate. If you are looking for something to cut more costs than just the money you could save by turning your lights off, here are a few tips.

The second thing you can do after making sure you are efficient with turning off your lights is to go green with your light bulbs. You can save money on lighting simply by giving up incandescent bulbs in favor of fluorescent replacements, which emit about four times as much light as an incandescent bulb of the same wattage. Compact fluorescent lamps (CFLs) are what these are called and they screw into standard light fixtures and come in a variety of shapes and sizes to fit almost any lamp. Most CFLs come in an ordinary light bulb shape but some come in u shapes and others come in a bulb that has a coil. Some CFLs do not have the capability of fitting in ceiling fixtures, for these you can buy an adaptor that screws into the light bulb socket and accepts a circular fluorescent tube. You might think that these bulbs are more expensive and you'd be right but the savings you get out of them more than exceeds the upfront cost of the bulbs.

Other energy saving options call for disconnecting some of the switches and light fixtures in your house in order to replace them with alternatives such as dimmer switches, Another alternative that is readily available bet rarely thought of is an energy saving night light. A night light consumes only a few watts at its very worst and is a good alternative to bigger lamps left on all night. There are even battery operated night lights that obviously don't use any electricity and put out an amazing amount of light. Some night lights come with a light sensor that turns it off when it senses light and comes on when it senses dark. There are several different options for lighting and all these options will save you money in the long run.

Indoor lighting is not the only way you can save money, outdoor lighting can be just as costly when left on all night or having a motion sensor light that is broken or is set to a setting that is too sensitive leaving the light on all the time. Replacing your outdoor light bulbs is a good way to save money as well and is just as easy as inside. It may seem that leaving an outdoor light on all night is not as costly as a light inside but you'd be wrong. Replacing electrical lighting with solar lighting is a great way to completely eliminate this cost. Solar powered lights may be expensive up front but when you think about how many hours your front porch light is on you will save money in the long run. Walkway lights are great and motion sensor lights that charge during the day are great as well. Solar powered lights have come a long way and actually put out great light. I recently bought a solar powered motion sensor light for my front yard and I actually had to adjust the aim because it was just too bright.

Again, you may think that these tips are petty and don't make that much of a difference but they do in two ways. They save your bottom line energy costs and they are also better for the environment.
