Saving Money on Meals While Vacationing

Linda M. McCloud

Some people may say that the best part of going on vacation or even visiting family is the food. Think about it. You are with people you enjoy. You may be an area that sells different foods than you normally eat and if you are eating out, you don't have to do dishes. This is not only a big part of one's vacation. It can be a fun part. Yet, if you don't think before you order or spend, it can be an expensive part, too. Here are some tips to help the average person begin saving some money while on vacation and still have a great time.

Make Lunch Your Big Meal

No, not everyone is a breakfast person and everyone knows that the dinner meal is the most expensive meal of the day. This is why restaurants offer bigger incentives to get their customers into the doors during lunchtime. These incentives can be an easy way to begin saving money on some of those vacation meals for savvy consumer. Plus, most restaurants, even those fancy ones will have serve a lot of the same dishes that they are known for during their lunch hours as they do during their dinner hours. These just come at cheaper prices and maybe in smaller portions. Another upside to making your lunch meal the biggest one of the day is the fact that most doctors agree that this is better on your digestive system. It gives your digestive system time to calm down before bedtime.

Do Your Research

No, matter where you are vacationing, you should do your research when it comes to inexpensive eating. Two rules of thumb are that the best areas to find frugal dining choices in most cities will be on college campuses and in ethnic enclaves. The college area is cheaper because the kids do not have the money to spend. The ethnic enclaves are cheaper because the cuisine caters to one specific nationally. Plus, the food is more authentic than you can get anywhere else.

Consider Group Deals

Use the internet to your advantage to search our deals on sites such as Groupon or LivingSocial that are known to offer daily deals on many items, including deals at restaurants. These may include a gift certificate at a restaurant that you enjoy that originally costs for $30 and is selling for $15.

Use The Hotel Kitchenette

If your hotel room is equipped with a hotel kitchenette, consider using it part of the time. You could easily fix up some salads and sandwiches there for late night dinner, after that big lunch. You could even fix a light breakfast. It may not be as fun as splurging out for every meal, but it can help you up saving a lot of money by the end of your trip.

If you do your part, to cut a corner here, you will actually save money on your meals while vacationing. This is money you can spend elsewhere or actually save, as you begin that nest egg for your next vacation.

These are good tips. If we're visiting someone within the country, we like to take a box of food supplies with us when we travel. Eating out each day while you're on holiday can be expensive!
