Saving Money on Needed Services

At some point in your life, you will likely need the assistance of an outside service. These services don't come cheap depending on the size of the job. Here are some tips for saving money and still getting the help you need with various projects.

Where is a handyman when you need him? I don't know about your husband, but there are many out there who aren't so handy around the house. No need to despair. Instead, try taking matters into your own hands for some of the items on your honey-do-list.

One of the first avenues to consider is visiting a DIY website. Many home repairs fall under the category of "do-it-yourself" projects and aren't as hard as they may seem at first thought. Fixing a hole in the wall or caulking the bathroom can be learned from articles, videos and pictures online. If the repairs are bigger than the basic fix, go to your local home improvement store. Many hold classes that teach customers how to do most of the work themselves on selected projects.

Issues with plumbing or wiring should be handled by a professional. Talk to friends you trust to see if they know an independent handyman who is reliable, does good work, and won't pad their overhead costs. A handyman with plumbing or electrical experience is a great alternative to a specialized service, but be sure you have references before hiring the first person who says "Yeah, I can do that."

Another option is to take advantage of newspaper offers to save costs on services. Companies advertise specials on their services all the time. Carpet cleaners give a discounted price if you have more than one room shampooed. Lawn care specialists may cut the grass for free when you pay for aeration or landscaping services. These special offers come in handy when you need a job done and don't want to spend a boatload of cash.

Then there are other services that many families can definitely use help with. For instance, what about your children's tutoring help? We've all seen the commercials for Sylvan and other learning centers that promise to help your child improve their test scores and test-taking skills. These centers do deliver on the results but they also deliver a bill.

Try checking into free and low cost resources available to you before considering a more expensive option. Homework hotlines exist so that students can get help on their homework from the comfort of their own homes. Teachers and older students make time to tutor students after school when they sign up and ask for help. Some schools have bus transportation that runs later so these kids don't have to be picked up by their parents as well. Many churches hold tutoring sessions for their members too. Some perform tutoring as an outreach program to local school students that could not get help otherwise.

We drop off our children at daycare centers while we go to work. From the time they maternity leave stops until the child is of school age, the cost of that care can add up. How can we save money and still get the best care? Pick the brains of those friends again. Maybe they can recommend someone to you. Enlist the aid of a nearby retired relative that wants to make a bit of money and spend time with kids.

Why shouldn't you be able to save money and still find good quality services? Do the research yourself to make sure you don't get duped. There are ways you can come out ahead in the money department as well as receive the services you need.
