Saving Money on the Small Things

WRITER
We spend money every single day. Sometimes we spend a dollar here and a dollar there. Small expense can really add up if you look at the big picture. Such items my include picking up an energy drink, cigarettes, soft drinks, and many other little things in life. These things are not necessities but just for our enjoyments.

Energy Drink
Pick up a Red Bull or any other type of energy drink for $2.00 a day when you go to work. Most people work 5 days a week and that will be 260 days. The energy drinks will cost you $520.00 a year.

Cigarettes
You smoke 1 pack of day that will be 365 cigarette packs a year. Which adds up to about 37 cartons a year. The average cost of a pack of cigarettes is $4.50. That will cost you $1642.00 a year.

Soda
The national average for dining out is 4 days a week. Most restaurants charge about $2.50 for a soft drink or tea. Getting water instead will save you $520 a year. Now if you have a spouse that will cost you $1040 a year.

Scratch Offs
People love playing scratch offs. You odd of winning are low. If you bought $1.00 scratch off a day you will be spending an additional $365 a year. If you bought $2.00 a day you are spending $730 a year.

Starbucks
The average Starbuck's coffee is about $3.50. If you picked up a coffee before work everyday at 5 days a week it will cost you $910 a year. If you drank it seven days a week it will be $1820 a year.

Eating Lunch
If you eat lunch out when you are at work for 5 days a week at $10 a day it will cost you $2600 a year. If you only spent $5 a day it will set you back $1300 a year.

There are so many ways to save money. You can cut back on some of the items that you really do not need and put it away in some kind of jar and never touch it for 1 year. Where can you spend the money? Maybe you can enjoy a great vacation or buy something that you really wanted. Remember, it is the little things that add up. I heard a saying from one of my bosses one time "Watch your pennies and your dollars will take care of themselves."

I a very tight with money. Though I do buy energy drinks only where they are 2 for $3. Gotta live a little. Oh and not going to bars would save a lot of people money. I no longer do and has helped my wallet.

Well, I don't smoke, drink energy drinks, go to Starbucks, never play the lottery, rarely eat lunch out, and my employer supplies our soda free (I only have one a day)...so I guess I'm saving a lot of money and thanks for reminding me. Hope others will read this and cut back.

I am a smoker and smoke 2 packs a day and drink sodas. I don't pay near that much a pack for smokes though, the advantage of living in NC. Great article!

This put things in perspective a bit for me :) I think you called out all my little vices... I am not a big soda drinker though, at least. I enjoyed this article!

Excellent points here. People can cut back in many little ways that add up to a lot. I wish I could get my husband to lay off the fountain drinks. You can buy 6 bottles for the price of 2 fountain drinks. Those who are old enough... think back 20 or even 30 years.
Some of these little extras didn't even exist. Investors have found new ways to open our wallets, and now some people think they must have these things to be happy. The same people wonder why they are broke.
