Finding Those Diamonds in the Rough

Flea market and yard sale finds can give you the perfect solution for just about any decorating problem you may have. In fact, shopping in flea markets has become the number one pastime for people in the United States. You can find much better prices at flea markets than you can by heading to your local Dollar Store. You can also find things that you simply will not find anywhere else.

In order to find what you need however, you first must understand that flea markets have changed in the past few years. You will find many vendors now selling new items, not simply those beautiful vintage pieces from years gone by. You need to learn to spot these shysters and steer clear of them. You can learn to be a savvy flea market shopper and ensure that the time and money that you spend will be well worth the effort.

First, you need your wallet and preferably small bills for cash purchases. You can take along your credit card and checkbook if you like, but it is much simpler to just carry enough cash to make your purchases. You will also want to bring along a tape measure and a small notebook and pen if you are planning to purchase specific items such as furniture. You want to make sure that you are getting things in the right size. Be sure that you measure the space at home to determine whether you can place a particular item in that space.

Now, you need to learn how to haggle. Flea market vendors want you to haggle. In fact, this is what they live for. Remember that your purchases at flea markets are non-returnable. Most vendors will not allow you to return an item, so be sure and look everything over very carefully before purchasing. This is when you need to haggle. If you notice a flaw in the item that you want, be firm and polite with the vendor and strive to get that lower price. Most savvy flea market shoppers will be pleased to learn that they can actually lower the price by up to 40% when they haggle politely.

Another savvy shopper tip is to always begin your shopping toward the middle of the flea market. Typically, the more expensive finds will be located near the front. Never be afraid to get in there are look for what you want. Root around through boxes or cases. You just never know what treasure may be hiding at the bottom of the bin. In addition, do not be afraid to mix and match pieces. Of course, you may very likely find complete china sets or bedding sets, but incorporating random pieces, such as a mismatched serving bowl, can give your home an eclectic look. If you are flea market shopping, then you need to learn the joys of decorating with flea market finds. Sometimes you have to make adjustments for missing pieces, but the end result will be a beautiful look for your home.

Finally, probably the best advice for those looking to bring home that buried flea market treasure is to dress comfortably. You are going to be spending a lot of time here, that is if you are serious about finding those diamonds in the rough. Never dress up for a flea market. Not only will you be miserably uncomfortable, but you will give vendors the impression that you are able to afford higher prices. If you plan to haggle with them, you certainly do not want them thinking that you are a Rockefeller.
