Saxophonist Tom Tallitsch to Release 3rd Album em>Perspective 11/17/09 on OA2 Records
Origin/OA2 Records Artist New Album Release November 17th, 2009
His first album 'Duality' was self-released in 2004, and features original compositions and standards in a casual jazz duo setting. Guitarist Dave Manley compliments Tom's modern jazz tenor lines with harmonic and rhythmic complexity.
Tom's Second Album 'Medicine Man' was released February 2008 on the Seattle based Jazz Label OA2 Records. This driving modern jazz album features a crew of Philadelphia musicians, including Vibraphonist Tony Miceli, guitarist Victor Baker, upright bassist Paul Gehman, and Drummer Dan Monaghan. Medicine Man is currently on playlists throughout the world, and was featured at the 2008 IFP Gotham Film Awards in NYC.
Origin Records (Jazzweek's Jazz Label Of The year 2009) was formed in the mid 90's by Drummer John Bishop, who later teamed up with drummer and former student Matt Jorgensen in 2002, to create OA2 Records.
Tom's newest OA2 release 'Perspective', has a slight change of lineup from 'Medicine Man', substituting John Stenger on the Piano for the Vibes, and Justin Leigh on the Drums. This current group of musicians has rehearsed every Monday in Philadelphia for the past two years as a "workshop" band, where new ideas and compositions are brought to the table on a weekly basis. For the first half of 2009 they had a monthly residence at Tritone on South Street in Philadelphia.
'Perspective' is a moody collection of Tom's compositions, which range in color, tempo, and groove, and meter (The opening track is in 5/4, Slippery Rock is 14/8, Propeller head 6/4, etc). Improvisations tend to begin sparse and thematic, gradually building to a thunderous roar fueled by drummer Justin Leigh. The final track on the album "In A Whirl" was composed by Cincinnati Pianist Phil Degreg and is a hard driving post bop composition featuring pentatonics and suspended 4th chords.
Here is what Origin/OA2 Records had to say on their website about Tom's new release.
"With vivid musical imagery and a dynamic group interplay, Tallitsch's Philadelphia-based band winds through a set of his original compositions. From the relaxed opening lines of "Swirl" to the uptempo "Red Giant," Perspective documents an articulate and cohesive band, including Victor Baker on guitar, John Stenger on piano, bassist Paul Gehman, and drummer Justin Leigh."
