Slow Loading Pages
The average internet user spends 5-10 seconds viewing a website. If they have a specific purpose for being at that site then they may spend a little more time. However, if your site was found through a Google search, that viewer will not spend much time on the site if it loads slowly. So, what makes pages load slowly? The first error is large graphics. If you are not sure what this means check out the average MySpace page. Graphic shifting is the second problem. Using many graphics on a page will increase load time as each one shows up. It will create a constant shifting of the page, making it hard for viewers who have started reading before the graphics and finished loading. It is very annoying.
Do you dress as you color your website?
Let's get real here. If you would not wear a certain color combination in clothing, out in public, why would you use that color combination on your website. Try considering the color selection of your website in the same manner you would consider your fashion sense. Moreover, if you still cannot figure it out - Ask a woman.
Text - Size Does Matter
Small text allows you to crowd in a lot more website material, but keep in mind that resolutions may be different. There are still people using old monitors that use 800x600, and people using newer monitors that have larger resolution. The text design of your page will change drastically depending on what resolution the viewer is using. Keep this in mind as you design your page. It is a good idea to check your website in different resolutions before you upload it to the internet. Embedding your text in a graphic, to make the size consistent, causes other problems. Go back and read the first mistake.
Web design is not that hard, which is probably why everyone and Uncle Harry make attempts at it. If you have a god-awful looking website and your friends are telling you how great it looks - Get new friends. These three little ideas will go a long way towards creating better, faster loading sites that are less of an eyesore. Make these changes today and build a better website tomorrow.
