Scarecrow Crafts for Kids During Autumn

Paper Plate Scarecrow

For this scarecrow you will need two paper plates, paint, paintbrushes, yarn, scissors, and glue. You will also need leaves and acorns; so take your kids outside for a walk and gather these nature items. Newspaper can be used to cover the work area and prevent a mess.

Start by helping kids cut one paper plate in half. Then help them cut one of the halves in half to make a lopsided triangle. Glue the triangle to the half of the plate to create a funny hat shape. Help kids paint the whole paper plate and the hat completely.

Then help kids cut the yarn into small pieces of about an inch in length. Help kids remove the acorn top from the nut itself. This can be done by gently wiggling the cap free from the nut, but make sure to gather a few extra in case you break one. Help kids glue the acorn caps to the scarecrow face for eyes. Add the yarn pieces for the mouth by making X marks along the smile line. Then add some leaves for hair.

When the glue has dried, kids can glue the hat on the top of the whole paper plate to make a scarecrow head. This scarecrow craft can be hung around the home or on the door for a welcome surprise.

Stuffed Scarecrow

A stuffed scarecrow is easy and fun for kids to make. For this craft you will need two large brown paper bags, a dowel, leaves, twine, two paper plates, scissors, glue, buttons, and a marker. Start by filling the bottom of one bag with leaves. Twist it to make a head, stick the dowel in it, and tie the twist with twine.

Cut one paper plate in half and twist it to make a cone. Glue it to the middle of the other plate to make a hat. Help kids paint the hat whatever they like. Then help kids glue the buttons onto the scarecrow like eyes. Also add a mouth and nose with the markers. Help kids glue leaves on for hair, and add the hat. This scarecrow craft can be stick in a flower pot to easily decorate your home for autumn.
