As the rest of you already knew, Al Pacino plays Tony Montana, the lead role, and does so in fine fashion. My first thought was that I couldn't believe he could keep up that accent all through the movie. I'll be he got more than one headache because of it. But he did a great job. My hat is always off to him and his work.
He plays a Cuban immigrant who isn't happy simply to come to America and score a job of some sort. No, he wanted more. Namely, he wanted everything, and he wasn't afraid to say so during the film. Well, as we all know, when you want everything but have the education of a cock-a-rosh, drugs and crime are your E-ticket ride. And that's just what he got into.
He and his partner, Manny Ribera, played by Steven Bauer, decided that they were going to teach some of the top-dog drug movers in the area how business is done, and they set about doing so. In very little relative time, Montana was making a name for himself in the drug-business, and he managed to turn quite a few heads. He didn't mind killing folks and he kept his eye on the ball. But man, that accent! I digress.
He eventually becomes a huge, roaring success and even gets the girl he wants. He literally had everything he ever wanted, and so was happy, right? Wrong. He began sampling his own products more and more, and the paranoia set in pretty strong. He had made a lot of enemies along the way, and now that he was among the top contenders, he had to watch his back constantly.
I won't spoil the entire movie, but the ending is nothing short of spectacular, even by today's standards. Yea, it's kind of hard to trump a gangster movie once you've seen Casino and Goodfellas, but Scarface must certainly be in the same league. If you like mobster and drug king-pin type movies, and are among the 0.003% of humans alive who still haven't seen it, I would greatly recommend this movie. It isn't exactly a flick to set the kids down in front of, but it is food for thought for the adults.
Oh, and say hello to my lil' friend. Sorry. I had to do that. Irresistible impulse, dontcha know.
