Scariest Movies Ever Made

In celebration and recognition of the times, it is always fun to remember the scariest stories associated with the Halloween season. Some people remember the man with the hook, the old woman down the street or the abandoned house that nobody was really interested in until Halloween rolled around.

Everyone seems to believe that they have the scariest story ever told in conjunction with Halloween and I am no exception. In my days as a little monster roaming the streets of my neighbourhood there was what I considered to be the scariest story I had ever heard. I will however save that for another article. For now I would like to focus on what I believe were very possibly the scariest movies ever made.

For the most part I tend to find horror movies or movies intended to be scary, quite hilarious and that is really what draws me to them. However, every once in a while I catch a film that I can't deny actually scares the bejeezus, if there is such a word, out of me.

Here in my opinion are a few of the scariest movies ever made.

Twilight Zone The Movie. Now I know what you many of you are thinking. Come on, the Twilight Zone? Yes! The Twilight Zone! There were without question, moments in this film that I thought were hilarious but there is just something about the surprise technique used by directors in these sorts of films that drives me crazy. In particular, the segment about the gargoyle type creature on the wing of plane that slowly drove William Shatner crazy. That whole segment made me nuts. Some people I'm sure won't buy this one and think the whole thing was just too funny but it definitely got me.

The Shining. Let's face it, you can't beat Jack Nicholson. This was arguably the best period of his career and his performance was riveting. The entire cast is fantastic and it still plays well today. I distinctly remember seeing it for the first time being freaked out several times. It has gone on to become one of my favourite films of all time. When it comes to scary, there aren't many directors who can do it like the K man. This film is shocking, original and leaves you frozen on several occasions. If you don't find it the least bit scary, clearly you are dead inside.

Poltergeist. Here is another one that I believe was done incredibly well. It may not have aged as well as others but it still does the trick. I saw this when I was kid and perhaps that adds to the fear factor but I distinctly remember freaking out when the guy was looking in the mirror and gradually started taking out parts of his face. Nothing like that had been done before and I definitely had nightmares about it. As you get older, this one may not be as scary but it is definitely memorable and keeps your attention.

Psycho. This is a classic and a testament to the remarkable storytelling ability that was possessed by Hitchcock. It was part horror part suspense and all scary. To see it in a packed theatre with a screaming audience was sure to leave you worn out and on edge. It still stands up today as one of the best. The cast was incredible and it was without question one of Perkins' greatest if not most memorable performances.

Finally, Gigli. It was scary not so much in the traditional sense, just horrifying that anyone would make such a piece of garbage. It could have easily been the end of careers for both Affleck and Lopez but fortunately for them, only seven people saw it. That is just plain scary.

That's the list and I hope you enjoyed it. I would love to hear your choices both real and imagined. Until then have a great Halloween season.

Your last two paragraphs are hilarious. Bravo for the wit! Also, that creature on the wing scared me, too, both in the original Twilight Zone episode and the remake.
