Scary Halloween Story: The Abandoned House

Kevin Choy
A family of four is in financial trouble and is desperately trying to run away from civilization because they will suffer severe consequences if they are caught. They've been driving in their car for days, trying to avoid other people and without a certain destination. They drive day and night, along the ocean, over the mountains, across the plains, and finally reach a dark forest. They drive deeper and deeper into the woods without noticing that they have lost sight of the road. They run out of food and gas, but they are pleased that no one will find them. As they step outside the car and the car lights go off, darkness creeps upon them. The leaves rustle as they walk slowly towards a small wooden house. A quiet 'screech! is heard in the distance. The four of them jerk their head back to the car and see that their car has disappeared; the only choice is for them to go on towards the house. After what felt like hours of walking, they finally reached the door. Scared of what is inside the house, they decided to stay outside the house until it's brighter. Within few hours, the sun rises, and the father assumes it is safe to enter the house. He carefully steps through the creaking door. Every step he takes makes a squeak in the old, dusty wooden floor. He cries out a hello, but only silence greets him. He finds a living room with a ripped up sofa and a fireplace covered in dust. He then sees that the kitchen is clean but has no cooking utensils. He also discovers two bedrooms upstairs with a bed in each. Assuming that the house is safe, he brings the family in. They spend the whole day attempting to fix up the old house and wonder why it was abandoned. As they sit and talk, night creeps up as the sun vanishes. The four family members lay in the bed together, trying to sleep with the quiet and darkness around them. They all feel uneasy and uncomfortable but are unable to communicate their words to each other due to the fear. As all four of them fall asleep, they begin to dream a dream that will take them through the history of the house.

In their dreams, the family members see the original family that lived in the house. There was an lady, who appeared to be in her mid-forties, cooking in the kitchen with the TV on, and her kids were watching it. Suddenly, the door opens, and a European man with a beard comes in looking drunk. The mother rushes in to help him in, but he yells and pushes her away. She falls, and the children start screaming and crying. The father yells out in anger, SHUT UP! However, the kids don't understand why their father is acting so unusally. The father walks towards the TV, picks it up, and throws it against the wall. The TV shatters and the pieces of glass and wood splinters fall to the ground. The kids continue to cry, and their mother holds them tightly to try to calm their fears. The father then heads upstairs to his bedroom. The mother cries while holding her kids. She is angry, but at the same time, powerless. She doesn't understand why her husband is acting this way. An hour later, the whole family goes to sleep. The father is in the bedroom, but the mother and her kids are sleeping in the living room. There is a resounding BOOM as the thunder shatters the stillness of the night. The tremendous sound of the thunder awakens the whole family. The father, still drunk, is furious. The children and their mother hear him bashing things against the wall in fury and swearing in a drunken slur. The mother can't take it anymore. She marches upstairs and yells at him to be quiet. The parents argue fiercely while the children cry helplessly downstairs. Suddenly, the man pushes his wife down the stairs and storms outside. The mother's leg is broken, but though she is screaming in pain, she crawls towards the kids. As she is moving towards her children, the father enters the living room menacingly and is holding an axe with two hands. The mother's face pales in realization. The father walks slowly towards the children, and the mother who is trembling in fear. Each step the father takes echoes in the silent room, and the rain from his coat slowly drips down in rivets and create a puddle beaneath him. The father whispers, 'I had enough of this family' and raises the axe high in the air. The mother screams, but her cry is abruptly cut off by the swinging of the axe. The terrible sound of metal meeting flesh resounds in the room, and blood gushes from the corpse as the children scream and hide. The father yells out, "Hide from me and you will suffer a slow and miserable death!" The children are already trembling in fear in their hiding spots. The father walks slowly towards the bathroom where he saw one of his children run into. The floorboards creak with each step, and the child is crying helpless in the bathtub as he hears his father approaching him. The shower curtains are torn away, and the child looks to see his father holding an axe covered in blood. The father grabs the boy and takes him to a basement door which is hidden beneath the sofa. He throws the child in and begins to look for the other child. The other one runs to her father and gets on her knees, begging him to spare her. The father shoves her through the trapdoor, and the dream ends with both of the children screaming in fear as their father leaves the basement and locks the door with a final click. A distant voice cackles, "Your family will suffer the same."

The father wakes from the horrible nightmare and finds his wife and children gone. His heart is beating out of control as fear dominates his brain. He panicks and can't believe this is actually happening. As he stops to listen, he hears the faint strain of a piano in the distance, the TV on downstairs, and the shower. Relief floods into him when he recognizes these familiar sounds. He walks to the bathroom to use the toilet, but as he walks towards the bathroom, there is water flooding from the bathroom. He opens the door to warn that the water is flooding, but he realizes that he can't see anything in the dark. Thankfully, he has a flashlight in his pocket. He pulls it out and gasps at what he finds. The liquid flowed a pure blood red. He runs towards the curtain thinking, 'This can't be happening.'The father is stunned at the grosteque image he finds in the bathtub. His wife's body has been hacked into pieces, and the parts were floating in the water as blood mixed with the water. He screams and runs down the stairs crying. He collapses on his knee as he sees his older child dead on the sofa with an axe stuck embedded in the chest. Suddenly, he realizes that someone is still playing the piano. The sofa moves to reveal a trapdoor leading to the basement. Without thinking, the father takes the axe and breaks the door's lock. He climbs down the stair and finds a grand piano playing by itself. As he gets closer, he sees that the cover of the piano is flapping rapidly as if something was moving inside. He is stands in front of the piano, and the cover is suddenly opened to reveal his younger child's body in the piano. The corpse appears to be dancing to the music of the piano. The father is absolutely horrified and begins screaming and crying. The sound of the basement door opening and closing catches his attention. He springs up on both feet to see a man standing in the dark with an axe in his hands. Blood is dripping slowly from the axe as the man laughs and walks towards him. The father inches backward into a corner, trembling in fear. The man slowly lifts his head to reveal his face. He has a beard and looks around his mid-fifties. His face is just like the one the father saw in his dreams. Losing all conscious thought, the father starts yelling, "why, why, why!"

"If you want violence, I'll give it to you!" the father yells as he bangs his head onto the piano. Blood starts flowing from his head, but the man reacts by laughing.

"You shouldn't have come here," the man with the axe whispers. "I lost everything: family, job, and now, this is what I live for. Blood and the pleasure of killing."

With those words, the man brings down his axe on the father and slices the father's head off. He begins laughing slowly and goes back to the living room, awaiting his next victim.
