Scenic Driving Tours of Upstate New York

Appreciate the Natural Beauty of New York

Susan Sosbe
As a child growing up in New York, my family would often pile in our vehicle and take scenic drives for family outings. Being home to the natural beauty of the Adirondack Mountains, the Catskill Mountains and Lake Ontario, upstate New York is a scenic paradise.

Whether you're looking for spectacular views of the mountains or the deep blues of New York waters, you'll find it in Upstate New York.

The Seaway Trail: The Seaway Trail runs along the northern New York state line to Pennsylvania. It is 454 miles and runs parallel to the scenic views of Niagara River, the 1000 Islands, St. Lawrence River, Lake Ontario and parts of Lake Erie. There are also several historic lighthouses and lookout points along the way. Just follow the green and white "Seaway Trail" signs. Make it a weekend trip to savor the entire trail.

The Catskill Mountains: Located in the southern part of upstate New York, the Catskill Mountains are a short driving distance from New York City and the Albany area. Take a day and escape the busy city to appreciate the beauty of a scenic drive through the Catskills.

Starting in Catskill, New York follow 23W to Prattsville. Head back east a bit to 23A and follow that through Catskill Park. This drive would be breathtaking in the fall when the leaves are changing colors.

The Adirondack Mountains: Having grown up in the foothills of the Adirondacks, I didn't fully appreciate the beauty of the area until I moved to the flat lands of Indiana. Now when I visit New York, I eagerly await the scenic views of the mountains I called home.

The Adirondacks are located in the northern part of upstate New York. Rich in history, there is also an abundance of indoor and outdoor recreation. They are a sight to behold no matter what season you decide to take your scenic driving tour.

Route 9N - Travel north on 9N through Lake George and drive through the Adirondack Park. With views of both Lake George and the Adirondack Mountains, you'll have many picture perfect views.

Route 30 - Travel Route 30, a part of the Adirondack Trail, from Wells, New York up to Malone and you will see panoramic views that would impress even life long residents of New York.

Route 28 - Known as the Central Adirondack Trail, Route 28 is a C-shaped route that travels through both the Adirondacks and the Catskills. It is over 281 miles.

Route 8 - Between Brant Lake and the village of Hague lies scenic Route 8. If you head east along this route, you'll drive along the Brant Lake shoreline and through Pharaoh Forest and Dixon Forest.

Backtrack west and you'll see the breathtaking views of the high peaks of the Adirondacks.

These are just a few ideas for upstate New York scenic driving tours. Another option is to just get in your car and drive, letting your instincts be your guide. Either way, you won't be disappointed with the view. If you live close by, take the time to appreciate all the beauty that upstate New York has to offer, and be sure to remember your camera.
