Scenic Train Trips of New York State

Marjorie Wise
Trains bring thoughts of a different era, a bit more elegant and maybe less stressful. Why not step back in time and ride the rails this vacation? No traffic, no high priced gas, no driving at all. Sit back, relax, and enjoy the scenery as the train takes you on a tour of spectacular New York State.

Rail tours vary from just a few hours to ten days or more. Some will include bus travel to area attractions, while others leave you to tour tows and cities at your leisure. Cruises on nearby lakes may be part of your itinerary in New York. It's a delightful way to see the beauty of the state without the hassles of driving.

* The Hudson Valley Explorer will take you on a one or two day tour of the Hudson River Valley and the Catskills in a 1950's Pullman dining car. Traveling along the Hudson River, view the mansions and mountains of the Hudson River Valley in comfort. Leave the train at one of the stops on the tour and see the sights or take a river cruise. This tour is offered by Rail and Cruise Travel. http://www.railandcruisetravel.com/

* The Grand Fall Tour is probably one of the most popular train tours offered. New York in the fall is a blaze of color and surely is something to see at least once in a lifetime. Ten glorious days of color through the Shawangunk ,Adirondack, and Catskill Mountains and the beautiful Hudson River Valley. See the High Falls Gorge, the Adirondack camps of the rich and famous, enjoy a cruise on Raquette Lake, have lunch on the Rip Van Winkle Flyer, and experience more sights on this fairly active rail tour. Free days for sightseeing at your own pace are scheduled into this tour. Offered by Rail Travel Center, this tour is sold out for 2008 and there is a waiting list for cancellations. http://www.railtvl.com/index.htm

* Finger Lakes Erie Canal Tour operates only alternate years but is worth the wait. Ten days of sights through the Finger Lakes district by train with a three day cruise on the Erie Canal to better see the sights. The tour starts at Albany, riding Amtrak's Empire Service along the scenic Mohawk River to Utica. As the trip progresses, you'll see Cooperstown, Skaneateles, Seneca Falls, Letchworth State Park, Niagara Falls, and more. Fine dining and comfortable accommodations are included in this tour. This tour is offered by Vacations by Rail. http://www.vacationsbyrail.com/

* Finger Lakes Scenic Railway offers day trips that are just fun. A three hour Blues and Brews tour through the countryside is fun for the over 21 set. Sip a beer or wine as you ride the rails to the sounds of the train wheels and live music. Boarding at different locations, these tours are monthly through October. http://fingerlakesscenicrailway.com/

Rail travel is not inexpensive but when the cost of rooms, meals, cruises, and the price of gas is added together, trains just may be the way to go. The trip may include sights you would not have thought of seeing. Rooms are booked ahead for you. Getting from point A to point B on your trip is taken care of for you. Is this not the best way to travel? Sit back and enjoy the beauty of New York State from the window of a train. Perfect.

I love train trips and am always looking for an exciting trip to plan. Thanks for the info. In my youth, I lived in Niagara Falls, NY and am always nostalgic about NY state! Informative article.
