Schnepf Farms' Silly Shows

Nekojin
What good is a day at the farm without getting to see a show of some sort? Schnepf Farms takes care of this factor of a trip to the farm without the gross out factor, in other words their idea of a show isn't the fact that Bessie the cow is giving birth to a new calf today. They had 4 different shows running during the Pumpkin and Chili Festival and I'm not sure if all 4 were just there for the festival or not. As we looked over the flyer we were given as we walked in the gates, Krystina and I both agreed that there was one show we could not miss" Hillbilly Bob's Pig Racing Show, the name just screams "Come and watch me! You'll laugh till you cry!"

We arrived at the show right at its sunset showing and as soon as I sat down on the hay bale and saw the run down old shack in the middle of the stage, I felt like maybe I should be enjoying the show with my sister. They did a great job of making exactly what everything thinks of when they think of a hillbilly home. At the start of the show, Bob came out dressed perfectly to the part ranting and raving about his pigs. Within a few minutes of the opening the first 5 pigs, all very large potbellies, were in the racing pens and there were 5 little kids up front cheering for their pig. Bob had a themed set of names for each group of pigs, and the play on words with each one was fairly funny. I'll tell you what, I don't think you've truly lived until you've seen 5 big ol pigs go running down a muddy dirty track trying to get into a little shack to eat an Oreo! Hillbilly Bob raced 3 more breeds of pigs, one of which was an incredibly rare breed that Schnepf Farms was lucky enough to have (they are one of 5 approved farms that raises the endangered species) as well as the last group of "pigs" that were covered in hair with very long legs, they were odd looking pigs but I won't ruin the surprise on them.

After the pig racing show, we managed to catch the "tail" end of a show with a man and his dog. From what I could tell, this show was brought in just for the festival as the performer was a professional street performer. The dog was pretty scrappy looking, and his owner didn't look much better, but the last part we caught was great for kids and good for a light chuckle or two, especially if you are a dog lover (I'm a cat person through and through so my view may be a bit biased on this!). While we were unable to see it live, I saw that they also did a comedian juggler act which again I would guess is seasonal. Lastly, while my girlfriend and I enjoyed a delicious bowl of chili we did get to see a jazz/country band that was fairly interesting. The music sounded a bit "oompa loompa" to me and seemed like it should be in a beer garden in Germany, but the lead singer had an incredibly deep, rich voice that made the band worthwhile. I kind of hope he reads this because in all honesty I'd say his voice is comparable with that of the late Johnny Cash. Tomorrow, I'll write a bit about the various shops that are scattered around the farm and give you the low down on some of the amazing baked goods I got at one of them.
