If you are already enrolled as a student, check with your local college or university financial aid office for further ongoing scholarships for teachers. If you are are a preservice student check out your local Board of Education, which has additional scholarship information on how to finance your education. Scholarship opportunities become greater especially for those areas all across the United States that are particularly lacking of teachers in high demand content areas.
Many of these scholarships do not require you show proof of financial need. However, be sure to check the websites for additional details.
For example, New York City is desperately in need of teachers especially in high need schools. Therefore, the New York City Department of Education has a wide range of incentives and special programs for teachers to be and practising teachers. It is the latest and perhaps the last major effort to restabilize education and attact motivated and qualified prospective and promising educators or pre-serivce students to teach in high need schools. Here are a few picks:
Housing Support Program. This scholarship includes a living stipend and housing supplement for those teachers who want to become certified, or get either a bachelors or masters degree. You must however agree to teach in a high need school for at least three years.
STEP (Summer Teaching Experience Program) is specifically geared for out of state teachers. Students are given housing support, stipend, a summer internship and professional development.
Graduate Scholarship Cohort Program. Accepted candidates seeking a master's degree will be placed in a scholarship track of study according to critical shortage areas in the sciences, ESL (English as a Second Language) and Mathematics.
For additional information on other various scholarship programs for out of state and New York State and City teachers, check your local scholarship programs for teachers wishing to teach in another state or in New York City.
The National Board for Professional Teaching Standards does require a $500 application fee, but you can apply to a number of major organizations, which offer a wide variety of scholarships for teachers. Each organization has state and education requirements; many require you to work for the public school system and according to critical areas of instruction.
