School is Back in Session at West Beverly Hills High!

You wanna live in the zip? You gotta live by the code. Just what is it about 90210 that has us so obsessed?

Ever since we saw the sneak preview earlier this year and heard the familiar strains of the old theme song, we were PUMPED for the new 90210. And last week, after finally seeing the two hour premiere, we were not let down!

Rob Thomas had a big undertaking, attempting to recreate Aaron Spelling's hit show, but we think that he's done a remarkable job. Katie is already a big fan of him and his writing team due to Veronica Mars, so she knew that the story lines and dialogue would definitely be up to par. And since Darren Star, the creator of "Sex and the City" created the original "Beverly Hills, 90210" this show was destined for success. We can't wait to see what new drama will unfold this season.

Not to mention we love staring at the beautiful people they managed to cast in the lead roles. And we're not just talking kids here, but adults too. Like delicious teacher Mr. Matthews or Rob Estes and Lori Laughlin portraying the Walshes 2.0.

Speaking of, if you've watched any of the original 90210, some of the characters might seem familiar. We know they were to us. Here's a breakdown of some of the 90210 gang, 2.0:

Annie Wilson aka Brenda - She and her family moved from a small town in Kansas (The Walshes moved from Minnesota) and the first episode has already highlighted her attempts to fit in with the Beverly Hills crowd, which Brenda also struggled with. We only hope that Annie sticks around longer than Brenda did, and that Shenae Grimes is easier to work with than Shannen Doherty.

Navid aka David - If his name wasn't indication enough, Navid follows in David's radio DJ footsteps. He heads up the school's daily newscast and seems to have a camera permanently attached to his hand. Not nearly as cute as David though, bring back Brian Austin Green!

Naomi Clark aka Kelly - Gorgeous spoiled rich girl with a cheating boyfriend. Need we say more? We're wondering what sort of trouble Naomi will get into. After all, Kelly was subjected to "being date-raped, using diet pills, being tricked into joining a cult, being caught in a fire, and temporarily becoming addicted to cocaine. In addition, she endured being shot, getting amnesia, shooting her rapist, going to rehab, being stalked and almost killed by a patient from rehab, becoming unexpectedly pregnant and having a miscarriage" (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kelly_Taylor_(90210)). Yikes!

Other potential links might be Ethan to Dylan and Dixon to Brandon. Silver sort of reminds us of Valerie. Luckily no one seems to be Donna Martin, you know how we feel about her.

But really... why are we so addicted to this show?

We will admit that we're into our fair share of nerdy things (dinosaurs, dragons, museums, jokes made for preschoolers) but we don't spend one day a week glued to them and six days a week wishing we were. In addition, we loved dramatic shows in the past, like "The O.C.," but if we had to miss an episode or two, the world didn't end.

However, with "90210" we can't get enough. We DVR every episode, including the ones we're home for. (Is that weird?) There's just something about the intriguing, ridiculous nature of the show that is SO addictive. We understand that it's dramatic (see: the above paragraph that starts with "being date-raped, using diet pills, getting amnesia..." and ends with "...almost killed by a patient from rehab, becoming unexpectedly pregnant and having a miscarriage") but we don't care! It's so freakin good we can't stand it! Not only are all the new characters awesome to watch, but we also get a couple of our old favorites... Brenda Walsh (Shannen Doherty who has not yet caused a scene) and Kelly Taylor (Jennie Garth.) We squealed out loud when we saw Brenda arrive in the premiere!

Our conclusion: "90210" is about more than just guilty-pleasure TV. It should be a bold announcement to all TV execs that we are SO OVER reality TV. In fact, apparently what we'd prefer is the furthest thing from reality. Bring on the "90210" spinoff!
