School Bullies: What to Do About It

Rashel Dan
Many of us have either been bullied, been the bully, or have seen acts of bullying throughout our childhood. Bullying usually happens at places where people gather, especially in schools. Although people think lightly of the activity, it is nevertheless a form of harassment manifested through a vulgar display of power. There is no legal definition about what bullying really is but it is something that should be stopped.

Are you being bullied?

Are you currently being bullied at school, home or at school? Does it affect the way that you go about your social life? If this is the case there are a number of things that you should do. First, you must report all these cases of bullying to someone. It can be anyone but its best if it's reported to someone who can act out against it. If you are a student, approach a teacher or a peer. Employees can voice out their concerns to those in management or even to local authorities if it's uncontrollable. Also, if you consider yourself to be an easy target, perhaps its time to act like you are not one. Try to show confidence wherever you are and show that you are in control and have no fear. If it still can't be helped, make sure that you are around a group of friends so that the person harassing you thinks twice about what he or she is doing. Fighting back is never a good idea because this may provoke something even more violent to happen.

Are you bullying people?

In the case that you are the bully (and sometimes you may not actually know it), it is just as hard as being the victim. If you are guilty about the things you have done, don't hesitate to talk to someone about it. The best thing to do is actually apologize and stop victimizing the person you have caused harm to. Talk to someone you can trust and someone who can help you to change your ways. This person can be a parent, a teacher, a co-worker, or just somebody you feel can help you depending on the nature of the situation. There are even groups that you can get in touch with over the phone if you fear being exposed as a bully.

Do you know someone being bullied?

The most important thing to remember if you do know someone who is being bullied is to report the matter to the right people. If you feel that you will not risk much by interfering with the situation, then it is all right to step in and help the victim. Not doing something about the act will only empower the bully to cause more harm and trouble to his or her victim. You can either tell the bully to stop harassing the victim without getting involved in the situation yourself or you can let someone else know about what is happening. Better yet, you can tell a whole group of people who can step in and help you to help the victim.

Bullying is a great concern because it is the main cause that many people grow up to be cowardly and sometimes even vengeful. Victims of bullying are at great risk of harming themselves and other people because they do not want to feel weak and they do not want to be looked upon as weak. If you are being bullied, know of a bully, or are the bully then you should do something about it. Standing idly is not the solution to any of life's problems.
