School Expells Two 12-Year-Olds for Sexual Assault Allegations

LYNNWOOD, WA - On Tuesday, February 20, 2007 two middle school aged boys were expelled from their school for allegations of sexual assault. The two boys, aged 12, had attended College Place Middle School. The students claimed their actions were part of prank.

Lynnwood police believe the boys' prank may have been taken too far. King 5 News reports that the boys had apparently been teasing another boy, who was a student at the same school, on February 9, 2007. The victim did not report the attack right away. The attack was reported on February 15, 2007. Prior to the victim reporting the attack, another student, who had witnessed the attack, reported it to a parent who then reported it to the school. As a result, the two boys were arrested on Thursday, February 15, 2007.

It is reported that the boys are facing second degree rape charges for their actions. It is believed the alleged attack occurred on the school's play field. The attack had occurred after the students were released from a school assembly. The two suspects had taken some rubber gloves, which had been handed out during the assembly, and randomly chose their victim.

It has been reported that the assault began when the two suspects decided to wrestle their victim to the ground. The suspects claim it was all just a game and that all three were just playing around. The victim claims to have told his two assailants, 'Get off of me,' repeatedly. During the horseplay activities, one of the assailants apparently pulled down the victim's pants.

It has been reported that College Place Middle School officials were not notified of the incident until earlier this week. Debbie Jakala, a school official from Edmonds School District, gave her thoughts on the incident saying, "This is an unsettling thing, so we're looking to provide that support, have extra counselors on hand, on site." By Wednesday, February 21, 2007, the school district had brought in counselors to help students, faculty members, and parents cope with the incident.

On Tuesday, the principal sent home letters with all of the students in the school. The letter explained to parents exactly what happened. The letters also advised students to not wait to report such activities on the school grounds. The principal also let parents know the boys received an "emergency expulsion".

Following the arrest, the two suspects were released into the custody of their parents. It is still unknown if the district attorney's office has enough evidence to charge the boys. The boys will remain expelled until the investigation is completed.

I'd love to see a follow-up on this one - was there actually violation or did people slap a label on (addmittedly horrible) bullying? Good article.

I read this when you first wrote it, but I guess I forgot to comment. What ever happened with this? I'm wondering where the teachers were during all this.

Great article. I cannot believe the things children are capable of these days, it makes you wonder how they live and what they see and hear within their family and households of their friends.
