School Grants Are the Best Way to Help Pay for College

Valerie Carver
No matter what age you are, choosing to enroll in college is a big decision. And with the high price tag of a college education, most people cannot afford to pay a tuition bill, no matter how "affordable" the university claims it to be. What more students need to take advantage of are school grants.

School grants are different than scholarships and loans. Scholarships are given by the college or university and are offered to students based on academic or athletic performance. In order to keep the scholarship, the student must hold a certain GPA and/or remain on the sports team, depending on the criteria of the scholarship. Loans on the other hand, are borrowed money that needs to be paid back to the school or state once the student graduates.

School grants do not need to be paid back and act as "gift money". Many students believe that grants are for those students who are underprivileged and cannot afford college, so they do not actively seek out possible grant money. This is certainly not true however, and grant money is one of the best ways to foot some of your college bill.

Grants are given out by the federal and state governments, colleges and universities, and public and private organizations. Federal and state grants are designed for students who are low-income, so there is more available to these students. However, there are plenty of other grants available that are given out by organizations and companies that tailor to any type of student, despite their economic background.

In order to maximize your grant money, you must be willing to put in a fair share of time and research. Start by filling out a FAFSA form, which can be done directly online through their website. After submitting your application, it will be reviewed and you can check the status online to see which grants are available to you.

Also leverage any unique traits or ethnicity you have in your background, as many grants are student-specific and reach out to those who are in minority groups. If you are a member of a certain affiliation or organization, check to see if they offer grants to their members. Also reach out to local businesses or companies that may have grant programs, especially those businesses that correlate with your specific major.

Finally, look for grants online. Not only are school grants student or subject-specific, but they are also tailored to specific degree levels. In order to find a list of reputable school grants to apply for, check with college websites that offer advice for college-goers. These sites usually have a list of links for reputable school grant money.
