School Killers Are Using Technology to Taunt Their Victims

Julie Boehlke
Another horrible school killing spree has taken place in Finland. Thankfully it wasn't on US soil but none the less innocent lives of children were lost for no apparent reason. When is it ever going to come to an end?

Unfortunately, technology is unstoppable and fast becoming a gruesome tool of the trade for killers.

The Finland school killer decided that posting a "You Tube" clip pre announcing the school shooting before it happened goes to show that these self made videos are becoming the way modern killers are specifying to get their messages across to others.

Before, it used to be a note was posted on the school walls or a handwritten letter was delivered to the victims or to the school posing a viable threat. Sometimes killers would even call a bomb threat in to the school. Now they can create their own montage of a blog posting or website to millions in a matter of seconds. This gives the killer the rush of being unstoppable and cowardly stalking their prey in an indirect way.

A school principal and his seven students were killed at the Jokela High School when a fellow student opened fire with a loaded gun at a school in Finland. This took place just a few hours after a bone chilling clip was posted by the gunman himself on the popular "You Tube" web sharing site in which he predicted a massacre to occur. The shooter shot himself in the head and later died at a local hospital.

The video on "You Tube" had a song playing in the background called "Stray Bullet" It also showed a still photo of a low building that appears to be the Jokela High School. The photo breaks away and reveals a red picture of an estranged man pointing a loaded handgun at the video camera.

These days young people don't sit down and write with Pen and paper, they choose to use what modern technology has placed at their fingertips; a computer and the world wide web.

The thing to really be careful about especially with media distribution is the so called copy cat situations. Sometimes school shootings come in sprees so a lot of information should be left out to the public in order to prevent this from happening again. There is always some "Crazy" out there trying to get others to follow in their footsteps.

There were in fact some unsettling messages that followed the video. These were mostly posted by other you tube watchers and read such startling things as "I am prepared to die and fight for my cause." and " I am a natural selector and I will eliminate all persons whom I see as unfit, disgraces of the human race and also failures of the natural selection" Immediately, You Tube yanked the users and suspended the accounts. That doesn't prevent other innocent eyes who may have seen those disturbing comments earlier on.

Speaking of Copy Cats, there is a striking similarity in the shootings that happened at Virginia Tech, Cho Seung- Hui killed 32 of his fellow classmates and professors and then himself. He mailed a video explaining why and what he would do. Although only pieces of Cho's video appeared freely on the internet, he ended up used technology and the media to express his actions on the deaths that he was going to soon be encumbering on.

The media's decision to air actual footages of murderers has sparked a huge debate about whether this in fact does lead to any copy cat murders.

Although most online video sharing sites are harmless and bring hours of endless enjoyment to the general public, we also need to remember they can also harbor murderers and their number one weapon; their video camera.

this is awful! its unfortunate that while advancement in technology is deemed good...a lot of bad stuff results from it (not saying the shooting was because of technolgy, but that the student was able to post it the way he did)

That's horrible. I'm sure posting stuff like that does lead to copy cats. Plus the views they get only feed into the ego and egg the copy cats on.
