School Supply Checklist for the Kindergarten Student

Shirley Norling
Kindergarten is probably one of first big steps your little one will be taking is his young life. To prepare him for this giant step that he's about to take, we need to have him properly prepared. This means he will need the right school supplies to help him get started in the classroom. Most schools will probably provide you with a list of exactly what they require the kindergarten student bring with him to school on that first day. If you haven't received that list yet from your school and you want to get those back to school supplies purchased, here's a checklist of the basic necessities most kindergarten students will need to get started.

Pencils: No.2 pencils-A package of 6 to 10 of these basic pencils should be sufficient to get started. You can't go wrong getting these for the kindergarten student's school box. Later on the student may be required to get some other pencils for special projects, but these should be good for starters.

Safety Scissors: These are a must for the kindergarten students cut and paste projects. Make sure you get a good quality pair of safety scissors so they don't end up breaking or coming apart in some way if those little hands may happen to get a bit rough when using them.

Crayons: A box of 8 may be sufficient to get started, but I suggest a box of 16 or 24 if possible. Your kindergarten student may want to experiment with more colors then just the basics.

Washable Markers: Markers are now a staple item in the school box of the kindergarten student. They use them for a number of projects in the classroom and washable markers are the best way to go for obvious reasons. You never know when a big red spot from a marker will show up on the white shirt of your little one.

Backpack: The kindergarten student will need that backpack to carry all those papers and homework to and from school everyday. There are so many cute backpacks on the market today, you're sure to find one that's just right for the kindergartner.

School Supply Box: This is a must to keep all those crayons and pencils and other school supplies organized.

Gym Shoes: In most kindergarten classrooms a pair of gym shoes is required to be kept at school for gym.

In addition to the above basic items for your kindergarten student I also suggest a pack of facial tissues, a bottle of white school glue, some erasers and a lunch box if your child will be carrying his lunch to school from home. The school will send a list home of additional items your kindergarten student may need as he gets further into the school year.
