School Uniforms: How Pointless

Bambi
There are many controversial topics that are widely debated in today's world. School uniforms (look-alike clothes) are one of those many topics. I think that schools that have school uniforms should reconsider and the schools that don't have them should never consider it. School uniforms usually cost a lot of money. Kids will still want the "coolest" clothes available. Cliques (restricted social groups) will always be unpreventable. Also, kids need to learn to be individuals. People may think that school uniforms are for the best, but I think they're for the worst.

School uniforms have been around for many years. Back in the 80's and early 90's is when I believe they really started gaining popularity. The school administrators like thinking that school uniforms incorporate pride, loyalty, equality, and uniformity. They don't really mean crap though. Some people who are all for uniforms like to argue that you save money on clothing. They would like to think that the parents won't have to buy the expensive labels anymore. Some think that school uniforms will break school cliques. However, this doesn't seem to prove very true anymore.

To begin, most school uniforms cost too much. Manufactures who specialize in uniforms realize they can get a lot of money selling school uniforms because there will always be someone who buys into it. The uniforms typically end up costing more than regular clothing. Plus, children are always growing. That just means you get to spend more money to buy school uniforms that will eventually be outgrown again, costing even more money. The truth is, school uniforms do not save money.

Next, children will still want the designer brands. Kids will still need normal clothes for the weekends and maybe after school. Chances are, they're still going to want the brands they've always gotten. Uniforms will not fix this issue, and I don't think it ever will.

To continue, many who are for uniforms argue that uniforms will prevent cliques. However, cliques will always exist. Kids will always be superficial and judge others on something. If it's not clothes, it could be hair, accessories, or even the latest high tech gadgets. Maybe they'll start judging other on height and weight, too. The same clothes might make them look a little more similar, but it's not going to really fix anything. I think almost anyone can tell that cliques go way beyond the clothing.

Lastly, uniforms take away expression. The education system usually wants people to be productive workers and in order for that to happen, they need well rounded citizens. Humans that are able to think for themselves probably have a better chance of becoming that type of person. Better thinkers could also mean better workers, something that I'm sure wouldn't have any negative affect.

To conclude, I don't think uniforms should never be considered. Though uniforms have been around for a long time, they cost too much and kids will still want designer labels. Cliques will still form as well. Also, kids need to be able to think for themselves and not be so limited. I believe that a school can still be successful and happy without uniforms.
