Schwan's Chicken Bites: A Product Review

Eva Gallant
As with all processed food, the chicken bites are slightly high in salt content, but With the busy lives we lead, we're always looking for delicious, table-ready, or nearly-table-ready foods. Personally, I don't even like making the trip to the grocery store; at this time of year, the aisles are crowded with campers from nearby beaches looking to stock up for their stay, and there are always lines at the checkout.

Schwan's is a company that delivers frozen foods to your door. The products are high quality in most cases and a little pricier than the supermarket, but I find it worth it to be able to shop on line or by catalogue, and have my order delivered to my home for a $1.00 delivery fee. The Schwan's man will stop by every two weeks with his freezer truck full of goodies. If you haven't placed an order ahead of time by phone at 1-888-SCHWANS or on line at schwans.com, you can order items on the spot, but the possibility exists that the driver may be sold out of an item you want that day.

Schwan's Chicken Bites are breaded pieces of tenderloin white meat chicken. They are fully cooked and can be used as an appetizer, a snack, or in a recipe such as sweet and sour chicken. They are easy to prepare and can be heated in a conventional oven, the microwave, or deep fried. I recommend the regular oven, as some of the crispiness is lost in the microwave. I have not deep fried them, so I can't say how that would work.

They can be prepared in a preheated oven at 400 degrees on a baking sheet in a single layer for 16 to 18 minutes, turning them over half way through heating. They are sort of like popcorn chicken-if you like that, you'll love these.

They are available in a 2.25 pound bag (12 servings) for $16.99, or about $1.42 per serving.

These chicken bites have a higher salt content than I would like, but they are very tasty!
