Schwan's Krunchie Potato Wedges: Product Review

Eva Gallant
With the busy lives we lead, we're always looking for delicious, table-ready, or nearly-table-ready foods. Personally, I don't even like making the trip to the grocery store; at this time of year, the aisles are crowded with campers from nearby beaches looking to stock up for their stay, and there are always lines at the checkout.

Schwan's is a company that delivers frozen foods to your door. The products are high quality in most cases and a little pricier than the supermarket, but I find it worth it to be able to shop on line or by catalogue, and have my order delivered to my home for a $1.00 delivery fee. The Schwan's man will stop by every two weeks with his freezer truck full of goodies. If you haven't placed an order ahead of time by phone at 1-888-SCHWANS or on line at schwans.com, you can order items on the spot, but the possibility exists that the driver may be sold out of an item you want that day.

Schwan's Krunchie Potato Wedges are just what the name implies, wedge cut potatoes with the skin still on and seasoned with a crunchy coating. The coating consists of bleached white flour, salt, rice flour, garlic powder, red pepper, oleoresin paprika, and leavening. They are crisp, crunchy on the outside and soft and moist on the inside. They come in a resealable plastic 2 pound bag. Because the wedges are individually frozen, you can cook as few or as many as you need. The cost is $4.99 for the 2 pound bag which contains approximately 10 or 11servings. This averages out to about $0.50 per serving. (A serving is considered 8 pieces.)

The potato wedges are prepared from their frozen state, meaning you don't have to spend time defrosting them before you cook. The can be deep-fried in oil for 3 to 4 minutes, or they can be baked in a single layer on a baking sheet at 450 degrees for 15 to 18 minutes. They make a great side dish with burgers or sandwiches or even as a snack by themselves. I have not tried frying them, but I have baked them. I think they're delicious and love dipping them in ketchup.

Nutrition Facts per serving: Calories 140 Total fat 6 g Sodium 430 mg Carbohydrates 18 g Dietary Fiber 2 g Protein 2 g Iron 4% RDA Vitamin C 8 % RDA

I have only included the items for which there are actual grams or milligrams; if I did not mention a nutrient, it's because it is not listed.

Again, this product should not be a frequent choice for someone on a low salt diet.
