Sci Fi Channel's Best Shows of 2008

One of the best shows to grace our screens from the Sci Fi channel would have to be the debut of their new show Sanctuary this year. Sanctuary stars Amanda Tapping who fans will remember from Stargate SG1 and Stargate Atlantis. Tapping plays Dr Helen Magnus who is a mysterious, quirky however very endearing physician who owns and runs a very large one of a kind sanctuary.

This sanctuary it seems is in place to take care of all the creatures that we as average humans have believed were only figments of some writer's imagination. The monsters and creatures that were only real in fairy tales are indeed very real according to this television show and Dr. Magnus is responsible for finding these creatures when they turn up in normal society. She offers the docile ones a home without persecution. However, for the creatures that are harmful to others, she puts them away so they cannot harm anyone again.

Sanctuary episodes start as Dr. Magnus hires a new recruit to her team Dr. Will Zimmerman who is a forensic psychiatrist. He had a very terrifying experience as a child. His mother was killed by one of the monsters that sanctuary takes care of. However, no one ever believed his tales until now.

Sanctuary is a must see as each week the viewer is drawn further into the complex history of Dr. Magnus, how the sanctuary came to be. There is always another cool beastie to chase and catch as well!

Stargate Atlantis is another excellent offering by the Sci Fi channel. It is in its fifth and final season. At first, when this spin off from Stargate SG1 started, fans felt doubtful that it could hold its own, however it has gripped them in the palm of its stargate and held on tight! The characters such as Teyla played by Rachel Luttrell, Ronon Dex played by Jason Momoa, and John Sheppard played by Joe Flanigan have delighted and entertained fans for the past five years only leaving them wanting more! Most fans are very upset that this TV show will not be allowed to play out for ten years as SG1 was allowed to. Sci Fi does plan to film a two hour movie in 2009 based on Atlantis but that is not the same as being able to sit down with one's popcorn and being whisked away to the far reaches of the Pegasus galaxy every Friday evening for an hour of fantasy, action, adventure, and more.

Ghost Hunters rounds out the last of the best television shows on Sci Fi for 2008. This show follows the paranormal investigations of the group called TAPS. TAPS stands for The Atlantic Paranormal Society which has been in existence for over eleven years now. They offer without charge scientific investigation of homes, businesses, and other structures that have been reported previously to be haunted. Jason Hawes and Grant Wilson head up the TAPS team. They work as Roto Rooter plumbers by day and investigate hauntings by night. TAPS has even worked with organizations in other countries to bring viewers Ghost Hunters International this year which has been very interesting to those of us who believe there are things out there that go bump in the night!

The TAPS crew is very believable to viewers as they debunk as many reports of haunting as they find are authentic. They use scientific equipment and hard evidence to prove or disprove the findings that they do get. Viewers are glued to the screen from week to week to see what new ghostly encounters the TAPS team have found!
