Science Confirms Spinal Manipulation Safe and Effective

Spinal Manipulations Determined to Be Safe, Effective, Inexpensive

A new analysis of existing research recognizes spinal manipulation, the hands-on procedure in which a chiropractor performs is as beneficial as other types of treatment such as painkilling medications for chronic low back pain.

Researchers have established spinal manipulations are safe. Dr. Sidney Rubinstein, D.C., in private practice and postdoctoral researcher at VU University Medical Center in Amsterdam, states the final decision for manipulations should be based on costs, patient preference and the safety of all treatment options.

Surveys have advocated that half of working Americans endure back pain each year. It has been estimated that 25% of American adults had reported they endured back pain for a minimum of one day during the last three months. Low back pain is the fifth usual reason people go and see their practitioner.

Patients most of the times turn to painkilling medications, which can produce side effects and become addictive or they use physical therapy which is time consuming and expensive. The new review turns its attention to a third option to observe, spinal manipulation.

Dr. Rubinstein notes that in North America, chiropractor perform most of the spinal manipulations. Practitioners hands are move around the patients spine and joints usually producing an audible crack.

The effectiveness of this practice for a very long time has been controversial. Some advocates are now slowly recognizing its effectiveness. The findings of the review support the cause.

The authors for the review had searched for randomized controlled studies which researchers consider the most reliable form of medical research. The authors had discovered 26 studies with 6,070 participants in which met their criteria to be included in the review. However, only nine studies were considered to be high quality.

The review findings are in the latest issue of The Cochrane Library.

Researchers had discovered that spinal manipulation had worked as well compared to other treatments. It especially works well in certain patients among them are those with restricted back movement and without psychological issues.

According to the review spinal manipulations appear to be the same as other available treatments.

However, it has been noted that in medical research scientists often use a placebo for comparison purposes, this is difficult to fake spinal manipulation.

Three studies had tried to fake spinal manipulation on patients however, it is not clear as to the results. One study seemed to indicate the patients were aware of the fact if they were receiving the real treatment.

How well did spinal manipulation rank to other treatments

Dr. Rubinstein stated the studies had shown that spinal manipulation did help two-thirds of the patients. Dr. Roger Chou, physician and researcher with Oregon Health & Science University, who had studied back pain stated some people respond better than others.

Dr. Tim Carey, director of the Cecil G. Sheps Center for Health Services Research at University of North Carolina Chapel Hill, stated many patients try numerous treatments, spinal manipulation is just one treatment approach.

Dr. Carey in closing notes that spinal manipulation is an option for chronic low back pain.

A in a study published in May to June issue of the Journal of the American Board of Family Medicine, the study had evaluated all promising alternative treatments for back pain. Chiropractor care was favored at 74% with massage therapy coming in second at 22%.

Chiropractor care has come a long way since 100 years ago. Now chiropractors employ other treatments to be used in addition among them is soft tissue manipulation, nutritional counseling, stress management, weight reduction counseling, herbs, exercises and more.

Chiropractic care treats numerous medical conditions among the conditions which respond well to chiropractic care include Asthma, ADD, Blood Pressure, Carpal Tunnel, Colic, Epilepsy, MS, Parkinson's Disease, Otis Media and Cerebral Palsy.
