One of the main science education facts about color that children will learn in kindergarten is how to mix them to get different colors. Many people believe that learning to mix colors is strictly a task used in art. The actual change that occurs when mixing colors to get a different color can be talked about in a scientific manner as well. These hands-on activities will help your kindergarteners understand the science of primary and secondary colors.
Science Education: Kindergarten Science Activities About Color - Colored Icing
Divide the students into pairs. Give each pair a set of paper or plastic cups with red, yellow, and blue icing already made. To make the icing, mix store-bought white icing with food coloring. Give each pair craft sticks for mixing, empty cups, and vanilla wafers. Model how to use the craft sticks to scoop a small amount of primary colored icing into each empty cup. Add a bit of red to blue, yellow to red, and yellow to blue to make purple, orange, and green. Students then mix their primary colors in the empty cups to make purple, orange and green. Ice the cookies once they have made the three secondary colors. Talk to the students about how this activity is about the science of colors and how important science is to creating beauty in the world.
Science Education: Kindergarten Science Activities About Color - Marker and Water Butterflies
Talk to the students about how color is a a part of the science of the world. Give each student a white coffee filter and a set of red, yellow, and blue markers. Have them color the coffee filter anyway they would like, but ask them to keep the colors separate. Once the filter is colored (it doesn't have to be completely colored in) give them spray bottles of water or eye droppers and small cups of water. Have them spray or drop water on the filter and watch the colors run together and mix into purple, orange, and green. Once the filers are dry, gather each student's filter down the center and secure with a clothespin in the middle. Fan out the filter on either side of the clothespin to make butterfly wings. Talks with the students about the colors in nature and how colors are a part of the science of the world.science
Science Education: Kindergarten Science Activities About Color - Water Color Snow
When it's a snowy day, and you can't take your class outside, bring the snow to them in a science activity related to the science of colors. Divide the students into pairs and give each pair a cookie sheet or shallow dish full of snow. They can help you collect the snow with small shovels if you desire. Give each pair a set of three cups full of red, yellow, and blue water with droppers in each. Let them experiment by dripping colored water onto the snow in layers to mix the colors. They will learn that mixing purple, orange, and green together makes brown if they put enough color into the snow.
Science Education: Kindergarten Science Activities About Color - Spray Bottle Fun
Hang a white sheet outside on a warm day. Fill enough spray bottles with red, blue, and yellow water so that four or five children can work at the same time. Let them spray the sheet with the colors and then switch colors and spray again to see what happens when they mix. Food coloring works well for this, but isn't washable if you want to reuse the sheet. To make washable colored water, take the ink out of a washable marker and let it soak in the spray bottle full of water for an hour or so.
