The Lehigh Valley Zoo is not only a wonderful place to learn about animals, it's located on the Trexler Nature Preserve, so it's surrounded by mountains, trails, and a river. The zoo itself is home to over 200 animals representing over 70 species, so it's a great science filed trip destination for elementary students as they learn about different types of animals and the natural world. The Lehigh Valley Zoo has an extensive educational program catalog for school groups, from pre-K to 9th grade. Students can get up close and personal with animals, learn about land and water habitats and ecosystems, and even learn about pollution and taking care of the environment. There are many options to choose from, and any elementary grade's science curriculum will be greatly enhanced from a science field trip to the Lehigh Valley Zoo.

Hickory Run State Park is a wonderful place to explore and learn about nature in Carbon County. Its easy trails, diverse habitats, and extensive wild areas make this a great place for all ages to explore and learn more about the ecosystems native to the PA mountains. But perhaps the most unique feature of this popular park is its Boulder Field, which is National Natural Landmark. Just as it sounds, the boulder field is a large expanse of nothing but boulders, believed to be a direct result of periglacial activity during the Ice Age. Elementary students will have a great time simply exploring this unique area, and it can serve as a wonderful science lesson on geological formations. Educational programs are available; call the park office for more information. Whether you choose to stay at the boulder field or hike around and learn about some of the surrounding natural habitats as well, Hickory Run is sure to be a fun and exciting science field trip in the Lehigh Valley.

Hawk Mountain is the world's first refuge for birds of prey, and provides an exciting and beautiful view into the lives and migration patterns of birds such as hawks, eagles, falcons, vultures, and more. Scenic trails and self-guided educational tours are available year-round; kids will not only be taken by the beauty of the mountain and surrounding wildlife, they can learn all about the native ecosystems of Eastern PA and the birds that live there. The science of this area is integrated into all exhibits and information, making this a great supplementary activity to a unit on nature, birds, or ecosystems. Group Tours are available by reservation and cost various amounts; programs such as live bird presentations, guided walks, and longer guided hikes are available and sure to enrich the educational experience. Hawk Mountain is most busy in the Autumn months of September and October, as many birds of prey can be spotted at this time, so reserve your spot early. This science field trip is sure to be a hit with elementary students.
