As a concerned parent and a teacher I can appreciate the all natural aspects of everything... especially when it comes to harmful problems that put people, plants and animals at risk. I can also appreciate the avid thinker and I promote new scientific breakthroughs no matter how small as long as they do not endanger life.
This experiment, I thought, was a wonderful way in which to teach children and adults the importance of science. It shows you how an oil spill is cleaned up using oil eating bacteria. The lab experiment is great as a personal lesson for your kids, home school parents, and teachers; it can be obtained through the DNA Depot or through Sci edge. The Oil Eating Bacteria Experiment is inexpensive and is a wonderful tutorial for anyone willing to learn more about this environmental issue.
The Oil Eating Bacteria Experiment: Overview
Because oils are made up of mostly hydrocarbons they can be naturally consumed by oil eating bacteria that are found throughout the world eating a variety of different oils in our environment. When applied in a massive spill they literally come into effect with a roaring hunger and devour the mass of oil.
Not only do you get all of the oil eating bacteria you need in this kit, but also the oil is supplied as well as the pH paper and test tubes to make this experiment one to remember. The comprehensive instructions are worded perfectly so it can be understood by children. But please supervise this experiment as care is needed. In the back of the hand manual you will find a blank chart to log all of your information obtained as well as a test or two to check up on your knowledge of what you have just learned.
I recommend this product for anyone who loves science or has children who love science. It is a very good idea as well for those interested in the all natural resources we use to clean up messes like these. I know there are many 'conspiracy theories' that float around about oil spills but the true fact remains is that we know a lot more now than we ever have to protect our environment.
