Scientists Explain Cloud Watching

Robert Guinn
Have you ever looked to the sky and found faces in the clouds? Sure you have, we all have, and there is a good reason for that. Scientist have discovered that people in general look for faces in all objects, anything from rock formations, to patterns on insects, it's just in our nature to do so.

Think about this, when there is fog on the window of your car as a child, what do you do? You draw face of course! And normally one that's smiling. It all starts when we are children, infants, we need to recognize our caregivers, our parents and the best way to do that is by knowing their face. As we get older we start to recognize other features about peoples faces and become accustomed to locating our friends and families by recognizing their faces in crowds. It is a simple concept but very true.

As we get older men start to notice woman, and of course looking to a woman's face can really tell a man a lot. Of course if she is pretty that's a big draw but other features as well grab our attention. High cheek bones mean a woman is full of vitality, and this is attractive to a man. Woman also notice features about a man from looking at their face. Their strong or weak jaw line can let a woman know if this man is going to protect her or not from a primitive, yet modern point of view.

Looking for faces carries over as we explore the natural world. In ever single place we go our brains are trained and programmed to look for faces. You may see a rock formation that resembles a side profile of a man, or a water stain that looks like the Virgin Mary. The natural world also uses this function of recognizing faces. Many times butterflies and moths will have patterns that look or at least portray the image of a large predators face. This will keep pray away form the insect and keep them alive.

One of the most common phenomenon in the natural, or rather supernatural world can also be explained by this reflex of spotting faces. People look at a photo of an old house, then point out a face in the second story window. They call this a "ghost" or "spirit of some sort, but is it really? Again, the human mind, our brains are trained form the start of our lives to pick out and familiarize ourselves with faces, so it might stand to reason that most of these claims of "ghosts in the window" may be nothing more then mere reflections that are tricking our minds.

From mother to father, butterflies and ghosts our minds are trained to locate and pick out faces form amongst the crowd. This fact may have lead to the popularity of the "Where's Waldo?" series of books, but that's just a guess. So next time you look to the clouds remember the forces at work, and you can probably guess why you see Abraham Lincoln floating by.

A famous photo was shot during the 9/11 terror attacks that depicts a hideous face in the clouds many assume to be the devil or some other horrible creature
