Any pet parent to a furry child knows what it is like to deal with equally furry furniture. As a long time pet parent myself to cats and dogs. I have tried so many fur removal tricks and always end up disappointed when it comes to something easy and inexpensive. That includes my recent try with my purchase of the Scotch Fur Fighter.
I have been on a search for something inexpensive and easy and hopefully environmentally friendly. The best option so far has been good old fashion tape. The problem is, it is a little time consuming and I end up going through a lot of tape. So environmentally friendly it is not.
When I found the Scotch Fur Fighter I was excited to try it, especially after seeing glowing reviews. It said that it came with 2 extra refills, which made me assume it was a disposable product, though a long lasting disposable product because 2 is not that many refills for something that would have to be replaced with each use. At least so I thought.
The Fur Fighter Hair Remover comes with a sturdy plastic handle and 3 MicroTrapper Gripper Sheets. The sheets attach easily to a slightly curved pad on the bottom of the handle. I figured with only 3 pads in total each pad must go far. I also thought I could find a way to easily remove the hair from the pad so I would not have to throw a pad away so often. Sadly on both counts I was wrong.
The first pad didn't even make it over my whole couch before I needed a new pad and this couch only had fur from 1 cat. When the pad could finally hold no more I made an attempt to try and remove the hair from it because I only had 3 pads total and needing a new one half way through the couch did not look good. All in all my attempts to remove all the fur from the pad were fairly unsuccessful. I did get some off to at least make a little more attempt to try tackling my couch again.
The instructions on the back, with a drawing, say you can move it any direction and it will remove fur. That may be so but in my experience if you pick a direction you might want to stick to it because I had times when I changed directions and the hair on the pad went back onto my couch.
I tested out the Scotch Fur Fighter on a black cotton fabric couch so no fur can hide from me when using it. I will admit that this hair remover device does work. It picks up hair, although not all of it. There was still some fur on my couch, though only a little. It did get the bulk of it. There were also a couple small areas of dirt on my couch but surprisingly they looked clean after running over them with the Fur Fighter. Bonus points given for not only picking of fur but cleaning a bit too. The problem is the pads fill up too fast making this not much better than tape or the expensive sticky rollers.
I spent $6.99 on this at PetSmart.com and the refill pads cost about $4 or $5 for 8 Gripper Sheets. Now, if you have a pet in your home you will continuously need to remove fur from furniture in your house. If a couch alone takes more than one sheet just think of how many sheets you would have to go through for one cleaning in a month. This would make the 3M company a lot of money but it would cost you a lot of money and take money away from your sweet pets needs.
I haven't decided yet whether I will be buying any more refills in the future. I am still trying to think of the perfect way to make the pads more reusable and less disposable. I am still on the pads that came with it and trying my best to remove the fur from the pads and reuse them as much as I can. If you don't care about needing to replace pads often the Scotch Fur Fighter does work pretty well. As far as being effective i would recommend it. As far as value I would not recommend it.
