Scott Hamilton Overreacts Every Time Skater Lands a Jump!

Jillita Horton
Scott Hamilton continues to overreact every time a figure skater lands a jump. Why doesn't the director of figure skating events do something about this? It's very annoying to hear Scott Hamilton's voice do triple-triple combinations every time a skater lands a jump, as though it's unheard of for a man to land a triple axel. You should have heard Scott Hamilton, 1984 Olympic gold medalist in figure skating, erupt in histrionics while commentating on the 2009 U.S. figure skating championships.

It's very common for men to land a triple salchow. During at least one performance at the 2009 U.S. figure skating championships, Scott Hamilton emitted his usual over-dramatic, odd-pitched vocals after a skater landed the triple salchow, even though the triple salchow - as I just said, is routine for men to land. In fact, adolescent boys do this. Adolescent GIRLS do this.

Will Scott Hamilton just shut up already and let us enjoy the figure skating without having to wonder when next this slightly built man with the overwhelming vocals will become hyper like a child watching figure skating for the very first time?

These are elite athletes, many with past major titles under their belt, yet Scott Hamilton reacts as though they are landing jumps never before landed in competition. He is the only skating commentator who cannot contain himself. None of the other commentators behave like Scott Hamilton. Even Dick Button, who's been commentating figure skating competitions for decades, controls himself.

And while I'm on the subject of skating, am I the only fan who wonders why, when a skater is doing an extraordinary spiral, the cameraman ALWAYS zooms right up into the skater's face, thereby preventing the viewers from seeing the spiral? We don't want to see the skater's teeth. We want to see the skater's BODY as it is positioned in the spiral -- the whole entire body so that we can appreciate the athleticism and beauty. Why do the cameramen zoom so close in on the skater? Is this STUPID or what?

This ridiculous camera stunt has been going on for years and years, regardless of the skating event, whether it's the 2009 U.S. figure skating championships, any Olympics, world championships, European championships, or other competitions. Sometimes, the spiral sequence involves extraordinary flexibility, yet viewers miss out on it. Oh, we get to see the first half second of it. But then the cameraman zooms right in there so that all we see is the skater's head and shoulders.

But back to the main topic: Scott Hamilton going nuts every time a man lands a triple jump. Look, Scott, these are highly conditioned athletes who train many hours every day figure skating. Just what are you expecting?
