Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World (2010)

Scott Pilgrim is in a rock band that aspires to gain success. He dates Knives Chau, a high-school girl five years his junior, and he hasn't recovered from being dumped by his former girlfriend, now a success with her own band. When Scott falls for Ramona Flowers, he dumps Knives and tries to romance Ramona. But Ramona carries with her a heavy load of baggage... seven ex-lovers, all of whom Scott must do battle with to the death in order to win Ramona's heart.

Scott Pilgrim vs. the World is a charming film with thrills and vivid action sequences that make viewing it, time well spent. Directed by Edgar Wright of Shaun of the Dead and Hot Fuzz fame, Scott Pilgrim is a fun ride that is filled with creativity and imagination. The story was pushed forward with style and comic book bravado. The wonderment of the film is how every seen had the feel of reading a comic book. The narration and dialog was witty and precise and the scenes moved forward with acceleration by displaying only the necessary details of the story. There was no meandering in the unnecessary or moments of empty film, merely the jumping of one exciting moment to another. Scott Pilgrim is filled with an abundance of comic book as well as video game references. It used vintage video game graphics, theme songs (Legend of Zelda is one example), and in game similarities. Basically the story told is open to all the suspension of belief that are required when reading comics or playing games. Wright and his collaborators did a stellar job at creating a vivid and imaginative world that kept us captivated at every moment.

Scott Pilgrim had everything that you seek in a good popcorn flick. It held potent action scenes, hilarity a plenty, pop culture references, and sharp dialog. The cinematography was vibrant with scenes that stood out and forced you to pay attention. The music while having an emo quality to it.. fit the teen concept of our present times and gave the film a recurrent image that really worked.

The acting was spot on in this film. Without Michael Cera as Scott Pilgrim the film would not worked as well. He gave the main character the charm and silent moxie needed to have us care over his girlfriend love dilemmas. Other notable performances were:Mary Elizabeth Winstead as Ramona Flowers. She was able to incorporate strong qualities that were needed in her character and a charm that made us all want to Scott to end up with her. Her distinguishing quality was her untypical colored hair but that is really not 'different' enough to capture our attention by itself alone, thanfully Winstead gave Ramona some resolute traits that made her engaging. Kieran Culkin, Anna Kendrick, and Mark Webber helped in keeping a consistent comedic flow through out the film with some timely hilarity.

The soundtrack is very appealing in Scott Pilgrim vs. the World. The songs utilized are impressive and resonant. Having strong musical accompaniment is a recurrent theme through the whole film adding to excitement and to the progression of what is occurring. Wright does an excellent job at utilizing the melodies to create moods or feelings in us, also effectively using them in change of tone.

Scott Pilgrim vs. the World was a real delight to see. It was captivating, original, and very much entertaining. It had a good amount of humor and even more amounts of potent action. The story is well told and at its conclusion you are left satisfied. Due to its stellar visuals and imaginative sounds.. It's definitely one to see in the big screen. It's a joyful movie particularly to those who love comic books, video games, and visual indulgence.

For those who care to know there are some notable appearances in the film. Brandon Routh (Superman), Chris Evans (Fantastic Four and Captain America), and Jason Schwartzman (Rushmore and Funny People) come out in the film portraying boyfriends that Cera as Pilgrim has to fight. They were all entertaining and brought a special comedic quality to their characters.
