Scottish Climber Falls 1,000 Feet and Walks Away with Cuts and Bruises

It's a Miracle Falling 1,000 Feet Off a Mountain and Surviving

Tony Payne
Adam Potter, who is 36 and comes from Glasgow, had just climbed to the summit of a mountain, when he lost his footing, and plunged 1,000 feet off a nearly vertical slope and over three rocky crags. He recalls the fall as being "like on a water slide, only more painful"

He lost consciousness when he landed, but amazingly enough though, when the rescue helicopters arrived on the scene, he was standing up and looking at his map.

Together with three friends, Adam had been climbing Sgurr Choinnich Mor, which is near Ben Nevis, the highest peak in Scotland.

It truly is a miracle that Adam received only cuts and bruises, as well as three minor fractures to his back, from what he calls "a little slip, which led to a lot more slips", and aside from just being a very lucky man, the fact that he was climbing in winter, when the mountain was covered in snow, and the fact that he had padded clothing, and rucksack, made all the difference to the outcome.

It's all too easy for someone to be killed by falling as little as 20 feet, if they land wrong, so to survive without even major broken limbs is a miracle, considering that Adam fell 1,000 feet.

The incident has not put him off climbing however, and he plans to go climbing again in a few weeks time, telling the media that he has had "worse cuts shaving". Adam did plan to have a go at climbing Mount Everest in several months, and so far, he hasn't been deterred.

The Daily Record has a lot more detail on Adam Potter, the events that led up to the fall, and his love of climbing. The BBC News has pictures of the location and a bruised Adam after his miraculous escape from the jaws of death.
