Scrabble Tips: What to Do with a Q

Will Wright
It never fails. Whenever I play Scrabble (or Scrabble® brand crossword game for trademark purists out there) I wind up with a Q but no U. Don't get me wrong. I like the Q. It's a ten-point letter. But what can I do with it? Even if I get the U to go with it, invariably my collection of other letters won't let me spell good old standbys like quit, quiet, queen, etc.... With this thought in mind, here are a few unusual words that will enable you to turn that Q into victory. All of the following words are approved by Selchow & Righter, original makers of Scrabble®.

What to do with a Q if you don't have a U
Try the following words on for size:

Qaid -- This is an alternate spelling of caid, which means a Muslim leader. The plural form is qaids.

Qindar - the is an alternate spelling of Qintar, the monetary unit of Albania. Both are acceptable. The plural forms are qindars and qintars.

Qoph - this is the alternate spelling of koph, a Hebrew letter. You make its plural by adding an S.

What to do with a Q when you do have a U
Sometimes you have the U, but you can't put it next to the Q for some reason. If that's the case try the word, QIVIUT, which of course is the term used to describe the wool of a musk-ox. The plural form is QIVIUTS.

The rest of these words assume that you have the Q and the U but are unusual words not used in everyday speech.

'QUOD' means 'prison' and is a British slang. I thought slang words are unacceptable in scrabble. Please confirm my doubts.

    Thank you.

I tried the Scrabulous site, and I thought it would be good at first, but I didn't care for it at all. Playing against a robot was absolutely terrible since the robot jammed all of the words together on the board. The robot definitely had a huge advantage over me and made the game anything but fun. Maybe playing by email with a friend will be a little more relaxing and enjoyable. My favorite site is PixiePit. It's a lot like the real thing. I prefer playing by email so the game isn't so nerve-racking.

The best "Q" word I ever came up with was "quasar", but it's never happened since. Thanks for this "quaint" article. ;)

I absolutely LOVE Scrabble. I love all word games, but I'm a writer, so of course I love words. Qua and Qis are also acceptable words. I used to play online all the time. Great article! Anyone want to play? :-)

Ahhh...you came to my rescue! Scrabble is my favorite board game. But everytime I play against my husband, I always (and I do mean ALWAYS) wind up with the Q. Right up to the very end. It kills me to see the look of victory in his eyes everytime. Oh well, even if he did get the Q once, he'd probably find a way to place it on the tripple word score. (sigh) Great article

Love this! I've had a winning streak in the family scrabble games. If I can get anyone to play with me again, I will have to pull some of these tricks out of my hat. Then, no one will ever play with me again, but at least I will win - lol!
