Scrap Fabric Checkerboard Game

Scrap fabric is perfect for creating unique accessories for your home. This scrap fabric checkerboard game is not only fun, but it also looks super neat when placed on a coffee or accent table in your space.

For this project, you will need:
- Two different colors of scrap fabric
- Ruler
- Fabric marking pen
- Fabric scissors
- 14 inch by 14 inch by 1/2 inch thick piece of plywood
- One inch wooden circle cutouts (available at craft supply shops)
- Medium or fine grit sandpaper
- Tack cloth or other style soft cloth
- Krylon Indoor Outdoor Primer in All-Purpose White
- Krylon Indoor Outdoor Paint in Dover White
- Krylon Spray Adhesive
- Newspaper and/or a large drop cloth

To start this checkerboard project, cover the space where you will be crafting it with newspaper and/or a large drop cloth. Sand a 14 inch by 14 inch by 1/2 inch thick piece of plywood with medium or fine grit sandpaper. Wipe off any dust on the plywood piece with a tack cloth or other style of soft cloth. Prime the wood using Krylon Indoor Outdoor Primer in All-Purpose White. Dry for a couple hours before painting with three to four coats of Krylon Indoor Outdoor Paint in Dover White. Let the paint dry overnight.

Lay out the two colors of fabric scraps. Use a ruler and a fabric marking pen to create eight squares of each kind of fabric that are 1 1/4 inch square. Cut out each fabric square using fabric scissors. Spray the back of each piece of fabric using Krylon Spray Adhesive. Adhere the squares onto the board, alternating colors and leaving 1/4 inch gap between. Leave a one inch border around the outside of the entire board. Dry completely.

Sand the circular wooden cutouts with medium or fine grit sandpaper. Wipe off dust with a tack cloth or other style of soft cloth. Prime the cutouts with Krylon Indoor Outdoor Primer in All-Purpose White and paint with Krylon Indoor Outdoor Paint in Dover White as explained prior. Cut out coordinating colors from the scrap fabric to create game pieces. Adhere the fabric to the cutouts. After all glues have dried, enjoy your new checkerboard game.

TIP: For a Shabby Chic vintage appeal, use two different colors of fabric with different patterns varying in each color, one for each square. (Example: Red fabric would have eight different patterns; Blue fabric would have eight different patterns.)
