Scrapbooking and Children

Reasons Why You Should Scrapbook with Your Child

Rachel Soden
Children always want to mimic their parents. If you scrapbook, odds are your child has asked you at some point if they could join you. There's something alluring about stickers, special scissors and glue that draws your child over. While you may be tempted to say no because you don't want the interruption, for a second consider what your child will gain from the experience.

As a parent, our number one duty is to create healthy, well rounded children. I can think of no other way to do this then to spend quality time with your child and create an environment that they can excel at. Allowing them to be creative, use their imagination, and be productive will develop their self confidence, self esteem and teach them the to value art as a way of expression.

Reasons why your child should scrapbook with you.

-Bonding time. Using arts and crafts to interact with your child will create a bond between the two of you. It gives you something in common beyond you telling them what to do and them having to do it. It will also create lasting memories that your child can carry with them and pass on to their children. While you are scrapbooking together, have someone take photos. Then you can scrapbook your scrapbooking session!

-Imagination. Creating scrapbook pages requires imagination. By giving your child the opportunity to do crafts with you, you expand their imagination and creativity. You also give them a deeper appreciation for art.

-Development. If you have a younger child, helping them to use scissors (make sure they are safety scissors) and to draw can help them develop dexterity. By allowing them to create something they can be proud of, you will help them to develop self confidence and self esteem. Scrapbooking will require them to develop a plan before they execute it.

The next time you finding yourself telling your child no, stop and think about the fun you could have. Weigh how much time you will "lose" scrapbooking versus the time you can spend bonding with your child. Scrapbooking is meant to be fun and allowing your child to create their own works of art can create confidence and will encourage their creativity. Once they create their own scrapbook page, display it somewhere where everyone can see. Teach your child that you value their thoughts and ideas and that you are proud of their accomplishments.
