Scrapbooking: How to Preserve Your Precious Family Memories

Julia Williams
There are many different ways you can preserve your family's memories. Some, such as scrapbooking and writing a family history, are creative and bring with them a sense of pride in your accomplishment. Others, such as transferring your old home movies to DVD or recording special events with a video camera, are a smart way to make sure the family memories are around for future generations. Which ones are right for you will depend on what form those family memories are in to begin with.

Scrapbooking has really taken off the last five years and has become one of the most popular hobbies. However, it's not simply throwing a bunch of photos into an album and calling it a day. Scrapbooking is more of an art form, a way to showcase your photographs by designing the album pages in an attractive manner. Paper selection, photo matting, writing, stickers and other embellishments can all give depth to your collection of family photographs and create a lovely keepsake.

If one of your relatives has some creative writing experience, then a great way to preserve your family's memories is to have them to pen a family history. Have them interview all of your family members, starting with the oldest and continuing on down to the younger generation. You might be surprised at some of the fascinating stories your grandparents have to tell, that no one ever thought to ask them about. It's important to get all of these stories down for future generations who won't know the people involved. If your clan doesn't have anyone who wants to write a family history, there is always the option of hiring a professional writer to do it for you. It's likely to be fairly costly; however, you may decide that having your family history in written form is well worth the expense.

My parents have a large collection of old family movies from the 1950s, i.e., those grainy black and white movies you need a projector to run. A few years ago we had some of them put onto VHS tapes, and I imagine we will want to transfer them to DVD as well, now that this has become the preferred method for preserving family memories such as this. The home movies weren't much good in their original state. We do still have the projector but what a pain it is to set up to watch our old home movies. Instead, whenever we want to take a trip down memory lane, we just pop the cassette tape into our VCR.

Video cameras are a common way to record history and preserve family memories, from the minutia of daily living to important milestones and events. Many families with children would consider it unthinkable not to own a video camera to capture all the special occasions as the little ones grow up. Others just like taking the videos because they can provide impromptu snapshots of family life. Regardless, video cameras are available in a wide range of styles and prices for every budget, and can be a quick and easy way to preserve your family memories.

As you can see, there are several good options for preserving your family memories. No matter which you choose, the important thing is just to begin, so that future generations will have these precious memories. Believe me, they will treasure them!
