Screenwriting Tips for Beginners

Luke Wilson

The best way to become a good screenwriter is to read good scripts and to write. I know it sounds simple but it is the truth.

Respect the craft, learn how to do it from those who have done it, and write. You do not need to attend some expensive seminar on screenwriting and you do not need to buy a ton of screenwriting books.

Reading scripts and watching movies will almost tell you all you need to know. Although some screenwriting books can be helpful, the danger is if you find yourself reading dozens of books you are going to find that you will be told dozens of different ways to write a screenplay.

The secret is finding out what works for you. Often times in "How to Books" the author is using the process that worked for him/her.

Screenwriters are storytellers and no two writers processes are the same. Find out what works for you and go with it.

Knowing a professional screenwriter personally, someone's mind you can pick would be helpful, but if you do not know a screenwriter no problem.

The next best thing to knowing a screenwriter is reading screenplays by others that have been turned into movies. If this is the forum that you have chosen, learn as much about it as you can.

There are tons of places online where you can find screenplays to read and download. Read them, study them, then watch the film to see how the words translate into action. Buy some screenwriting software if you can afford to.

This is going to be one of your biggest expenses, but it is worth it. If you cannot afford to buy the software, some sites offer free trial periods of the software, download it.

This way you will at least be able to get a feel for some of the tools that they have to offer until you can afford to buy the software for yourself.

Lastly write; writing is like anything else the more you do it the better at it you will get.
