Scripture for Those Who Are Suffering with Depression

Biblical Wisdom to Support Your Recovery

Marilyn Quinn
Christians seek to find strength and wisdom in the Bible for aid in our daily lives. In time of depression, we sometimes turn away from God and feel like he has abandoned us. I have compiled some verses here that will help you turn your mind and your heart in the right direction in times of depression; whether it be a short-term depression based on circumstances or a chronic, clinical depression.

Philippians 4:8-9 (King James Version)

8 Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things.

9 Those things, which ye have both learned, and received, and heard, and seen in me, do: and the God of peace shall be with you.

In our depression, we tend to over think and dwell on the negatives in our lives. We replay past hurts and run them over again in our minds on a loop that just keeps refreshing our pain and anguish. Philippians 4:8-9 tells us to think on the good things. Fill your mind with the positives and let go of the bad thoughts.

Keep a written list of all you have to be thankful for. While in the depressed state, you may find it hard to focus on the good amongst all your bad; but there are many blessings that you can be grateful for and they are what you should focus on. There are many who have verbal arguments with their spouse, but they can be thankful that their spouse is not physically violent, for example.

Psalm 34:18 (King James Version)

18 The LORD is nigh unto them that are of a broken heart; and saveth such as be of a contrite spirit.

Psalm 23:4 (King James Version)

4 Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me.

Romans 8:38-39 (King James Version)

38 For I am persuaded, that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor powers, nor things present, nor things to come,

39 Nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.

We have not been abandoned by God, even when we feel like we are alone and without blessing. God is always there whether we feel him or not. Take heart in these scriptures and know that God is with you, beside you, whatever your trial or circumstance. You have only to meditate on these scriptures to know that you are never without Gods presence and protection.

Isaiah 41:10 (King James Version)

10 Fear thou not; for I am with thee: be not dismayed; for I am thy God: I will strengthen thee; yea, I will help thee; yea, I will uphold thee with the right hand of my righteousness.

Exodus 15:2 (King James Version)

2 The LORD is my strength and song, and he is become my salvation: he is my God, and I will prepare him an habitation; my father's God, and I will exalt him.

2 Samuel 22:33 (King James Version)

33 God is my strength and power: and he maketh my way perfect.

We often feel helpless and weak when we are depressed and blue. We may feel like there is no hope and we cannot go on. Look to God for the strength you need to go on. The Lord will be your strength. We don't have to have everything and be everything, we just have to trust in God to provide for us. Trust in the power of God to work in your life. Meditate on these scriptures as often as necessary to pull you through in times of adversity.
